error 1531 too few clusters
Jan 20th, 2006 at 12:45pm

In using Partition magic, trying to create 3- 40G drives out of the total 120G, during resizing the first 80G I'm getting error 1531 too few clusters.  Any suggestions?  There's only 23G data on this 80G so I figured 40G would be plenty of room.  What am I missing?  Thanks for any help.

Thanks for replying, Ghost4....they suggested CHKDSK/F which I  tried...now I get error 983: too many errors, and their solution for that is....you guessed it, run CHKDSK again.....what gets me is that this hard drive is only about 4 months old and I haven't had any trouble with it...so why are there errors?  Again, I'm a newbie so I appreciate ANY info, even if you think it's too 'elementary'...thanks again...

Are you running Windows XP or Windows 9x?

Are the partitions FAT32 or NTFS?

NTFS has better integrity and correction.

you should get a clean no-error messages from running chkdsk driveletter: /f on ALL partitions before trying to resize them.

If there is nothing on the 120GB drive, then you can delete all partitions on it first.

Be CAREFUL when modifying partitions, and be SURE you have a good backup first!!
