No boot files on downloaded Ghost 10 ISO disk?
Feb 9th, 2006 at 5:56pm

I've used Ghost 2003 for a while on my Win 98 SE computer, but between a USB keyboard, SATA hard drive and USB backup hard drive, I was experiencing significant problems creating a disk clone on my new Windows XP machine. I still hold out hope of getting it to work; I have to read further in these forums.

However, I downloaded a bundle from Norton/Symantec that included an upgrade to Ghost 9 and a year subscription to their NIS software. Ghost 9 failed to install, and I was allowed to upgrade to Ghost 10.

There are two downloaded files. The is the setup file for Ghost 10 (works fine in image mode, at least on the surface; still problematic in clone mode); and there's a zipped ISO file. I used Nero to burn the ISO to CD twice.

This didn't boot. I've examined the root directory of the CD in DOS, and there are no system files. I can't see how this can possibly be used to do a disk restore. Am I doing something wrong here, or is this a Symantec problem? Presumably, since the ISO unzipped and burned correctly, there was no problem with the download.

Perplexedly,

Edward.

I just looked at the files in my Ghost 10 boot cd root.  They are:
WIN51
WIN51IA
WIN51ISP1
WINBOM.INI
GB_PROG.EXE

Are these files on yours?

Edward,

I suspect you burnt the ISO incorrectly. In Nero you must choose Recorder, Burn Image, etc. I think you must have burnt the ISO as a file, not as an image.

Thanks for your responses. This is the root directory of the CD:

09/30/2005  02:29 PM    <DIR>          AUTORUN
09/30/2005  01:00 PM    <DIR>          DOCS
09/30/2005  01:00 PM    <DIR>          DOCUMENTS AND SETTINGS
09/30/2005  01:00 PM    <DIR>          DRIVER VALIDATION
09/30/2005  01:00 PM    <DIR>          GOBACK
09/30/2005  01:02 PM    <DIR>          I386
09/30/2005  02:31 PM    <DIR>          SUPPORT
09/30/2005  01:02 PM    <DIR>          TOUR
09/09/2005  09:02 PM         1,351,680 AUTORUN.EXE
09/09/2005  09:02 PM                47 AUTORUN.INF
09/09/2005  09:01 PM           473,600 GB_PROG.EXE
09/09/2005  09:02 PM           806,912 UPDTLCTR.EXE
09/09/2005  09:01 PM                10 WIN51
09/09/2005  09:01 PM                10 WIN51IA
09/09/2005  09:01 PM                10 WIN51IA.SP1
09/09/2005  09:01 PM               167 WINBOM.INI
              8 File(s)      2,632,436 bytes
              8 Dir(s)               0 bytes free

I'm now wondering if (despite having set the boot sequence to CD first) the CD isn't being included. But I'm a bit puzzled, because I would have expected something in the way of a command interpreter, etc. I'm new to XP,  so excuse me if this is a naive statement!

Comments or suggestions as to what's happening here? This is a Dell 5150. I may go back to figuring out how to get 2003 to operate on my system, if it is possible,  as I'm not clear if the scheme that Ghost 9 & 10 uses is as reliable.

Ted.

Sorry mate. You did burn it correctly.

Your CD looks much the same as mine. With a Dell, pressing F12 takes you to the boot choice menu. Have you tried that?

Thanks, Brian. There may be an issue with the CD-ROM--hadn't even thought to check that possibility, as it appeared to be working just fine under Windows. The computer won't boot from CD using either F2 and a changed boot sequence (the method I had been using) or factory default settings using the boot menu on F12. On the latter it  throws up an error message that it can't find the device, or words to that effect. I tried a couple of disks (including Windows) that should be bootable.  Aaagh--I hate new computers.

I have a portable USB CD-ROM -- I may give that a try, as I do know that the machine will boot from a USB drive.  I'll definitely have a word with Dell support in the AM.

I appreciate the quick and helpful response here on this forum.

Is the CD drive turned ON in the BIOS? I added a CD drive to my computer (Dell 8400) and although it functioned in Windows, it was in PIO mode. This was corrected when I found the BIOS setting was OFF.

An accidental discovery.

Ted, as John mentioned, make sure the RE boots properly and you can see your internal and external HD's. Be especially careful if the drive letter of your external HD is changed (in the future) in Windows.
