Are you *sure* you have the settings as circled on the *View tab* screenshot of the *Folder Options* (see reply #6 above)--there are three items that have to be set correctly.
 

No question is stupid...but, possibly the answers are  Wink !

yes tried again with explorer and got the same results. However I did try and view the boot.ini by right clicking My Computer and going through Properties and then Restore and Recovery and when I selected save as when viewing the boot.ini it defaulted to the C: root.

well finally found the boot.ini and it is on the C: drive, I used the explore function in PartitionMagic and it displayed the files. Thanks for all the help.
