Norton Ghost 2003 blocks startup WinXP
Aug 10th, 2006 at 9:05am

Well, I did browse the forums here for a solution, but the few threads I found didn't bring me much further. Here's teh problem.

I just got a new PC. Installed my main programs, updated all drivers, installed Ghost and went for a clean image.

Ghost closed the PC, started it's DOS shell and did nothing for 20 minutes, so I closed down the PC, which didn't want to restart Windows but stuck with ghost instead. Rebooting Windows didn't do anything.

I tried ghreboot, which told me there was no active partition  and if it should set one (option 3). I accepted and after this I only get a black screen with a cursor.

I made a new bootdisk with the program MBR Wizard on it, and it nicely shows me my partitions, including an active partition where Windows is located. Ghost itself (in DOS mode) sees the right partitions as well.

I tried Gdisk, but that gives me "invalid fixed disk number -- 1", after 10 minutes of inactivity. I also noted that starting Gdisk with a wrong parameter takes about 10 minutes to generate a 'wrong parameter' message.

Ghreboot doesn't return anything now.

Other weird things: if I start from my own bootdisk I can access the following drive letters:

A - The bootdisk
B - Also the bootdisk (? ? ?)
C - CD station 1
D - CD station 2

The rest is unknown.

Anyway... I suspect some MBR problems, and maybe a hidden diagnostic partition from the system manyfacturer. Does any of you has a good suggestion what to do next?

I already read Symantec pages like this one:

http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/ghost.nsf/docid/2002110115000025?Open&docid...

Thanks in advance,

Disco

ps. ANYTHING involving Ghreboot or Gdisk takes ages... at least 10 minutes.

What system do you have?

What is the layout of your HDD--where is the *hidden diagnostic partition* in the layout?  Is there a *restore partition* as well as a *diagnostic partition*?

Maybe these will help:

Dan Goodell's *Inside the Dell Utility Partition*

Dan Goodell's *Inside the Dell PC Restore Partition*

Re: Ghost and PC Restore on Dell

Ghost 9 copy drive probs

Your *boot.ini* file may be pointing to the wrong *partition* if Ghost has put in another partition entry that has messed up the order that is seen in the partition table.  Here are some trouble shooting resources for that:

Editing the Boot.ini file using BTini

If you look under the heading *Editing Boot.ini*, it explains how to use *PartInfo.exe* to generate a *Diagnostic Report*--after the shown example of the diagnositic report, it outlines how to determine what the actual boot number is needed for the *partitition(X)* in the boot.ini file.

If you look under the heading *If Boot.ini is on an NTFS partition*--there's a link to download the program to edit boot.ini called *BTini*, or click here:

BTini.zip

***********************************************
There appears to be better tools for editing *boot.ini* now:

The Ghost 9.x and 10.x *Recovery Disk*, I think under *Advanced Utilities* has a *Edit Boot.ini* utility.

And there is a freeware program that can be run from DOS from TeraByte called *EditBINI* found here:

TeraByte Unlimited Freeware--look for EditBINI

***********************************************

You can get *PartInfo for DOS* here:

PartInfo.zip for DOS

and how to use it here:

Generating diagnostic reports using Partinfo.exe

O, of course! Here's the specs first...

I have a generic AMD 4200 x2 system, Asus M2N-E Mobo.

Disk 1 - Samsung Spinpoint, 80 GB, Serial ATA300
Part 0 - 20 GB, C: *
Part 1 - 60 GB, D: **

Disk 2 - Samsung Spinpoint, 200 GB, Serial ATA300
Part 0 - 50 GB, E:
Part 1 - 50 GB, F:
Part 2 - 50 GB, G:
Part 3 - 50 GB, H:

CD1 - NEC DV-5800D DVD reader
CD2 - NEC ND-3550 DVD writer

According to MBRwiz all partitions are visible, and disk 0, part 0 is active. All MBR indexes correspond with the partition indexes. All partitions are NTFS, which is probably the reason I can't see them in DOS.

* Windows & partition I want to make an image of
** Partition to store the image

I'll start reading the rest of your comments now Cheesy

What does MBRwiz's output actually show for Disk 0?

I don't see a *hidden diagnostic partition* listed in your post.

I suspected a hidden partition.. mainly because of the symptoms. Can't find one, though.

MBRwizd says:

Disk: 0
Pos = 0
MBRindex = 0
Type/Name = 07/NTFS
Size = 20G
Active = yes
Hide = No
Start Sector = 63
Sectors = 40,965,687

Okay--that's one partition for disk #0--what's the info for the second partition?

Disk: 0
Pos = 1
MBRindex = 1
Type/Name = **/EXTEND
Size = 59G
Active = No
Hide = No

Dunno the rest exactly... trying btini now... but /show also takes ages to do anything.

I also tried PartInfo, but I wonder if that one shows everything...

Looking at the boot.ini now...

[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Hone Edition" /noexecute=optin /fastdetect /usepmtimer

Tried with the partitions set to 0 instead of 1, still no go.

The XP recovery console does detect windows on the right drive, btw.

FixMBR is my best friend from now on...

I didn't dare to use it because I didn't have clue what it does (MS mumbojumbo is always a joy to digest), but it worked!

Still want to backup my system, though.. any hints? I didn't update Ghost 2003, of course.

If everything else looked okay, Recovery Console was going to be the next suggestion--you beat me to it!

*New System*--using SATA HDD's?

SATA II, as mentioned above. Did you expect RAM disks? Cheesy

Anyway, I guess I will try the good old DOS Ghost.
