Windows XP or 2000 won't boot with newly Copied HD
Sep 17th, 2006 at 3:18am

I'm trying to use Norton Ghost 9.0 to copy two partition out ot three on my Maxtor SATA 160 GB(vol.C 2000 20GB, vol.D XP 30GB pro, vol.E Movies) dual boot(2000&XP pro) to a new Samsung PATA 80 GB installed and recognized by BIOS & OS as slave, even though i get to copy both my partitions one by one on new HDD in about 6 minutes each but can't boot to either windows, it freezes at welcome screen in XP after asking which OS to boot or give error that no pagefile available when chose to win2000pro options, old SATA still attached but off the controller?. Also how can i see which partition is active in computer management please?. I wanted to keep new copied drive as a backup of my SATA. thankyou.

waseemaq,

It sounds like you are dual booting the Microsoft way. See "What's wrong with the Microsoft way" as it's relevant to backing up.

http://www.goodells.net/multiboot/principles.htm

I have no experience using Copy Drive in this situation and all I can suggest is read these threads and apply the information to your computer.

I suggest copying into Unallocated Space, don't assign any drive letters and don't resize the partitions. Set drive active for the Win 2000 partition. Keep us informed.

Thankyou Brian ,
For your links , i've spent good 3 hours to make things work !!!! finaly, i'm on wth my new Samsung HDD, summary of my fix is below, i wished norton had done  more explaining to Copying (cloning) a HDD section. Anyhow here it is.

1:  Copy Drive one partiotion at a time to another Slave HDD ,as in my case first partition win2000 ,20GB copied in little under 6minutes and second partion winXP 40 in little under 14 minutes  , into unallocated and unpartioned drive space with no dirve letter(none) checked along with make drive active and checked copy MBR too.copy MBR only for first partiton.

2:  Remove original Drive and set jumper to new drive to     Master.

3:  download a windows 98 startup disk (to fix drive letters as explained in "method#3" in (www.goodells.net/multiboot/partsigs.htm) and then boot with this floppy and run " fdisk/mbr"

4:  Remove floppy and boot regularly with the newly Copied drive ( i booted to win2000 pro first). and voila !!! home free..
i'm so happy.
thanks i hope this will help others too.
