(Ghost 10) Copied XP System to new drive...
Mar 17th, 2007 at 12:58pm

I used Norton Ghost 10 to copy my XP system partition to a new drive (I am upgrading the drive on my NC8000 laptop) - prior to the copy I configured Ghost to set the partition as "active" and to copy the MBR. The copy completed successfully, I removed the old drive from my laptop and replaced with my new drive...

When I attempt to boot Windows, XP hangs at the welcome screen (prior to login screen)...

I've attempted to use my XP installation disk to do a repair (from the recovery console I've executed the "fixmbr" and "fixboot" commands) to no avail...

I know I will eventually need to modify the registry as the "new" installation is resident on the D:\ drive (should be see) - I've found a procedure for doing this online, but right now I cannot even log into my "new" XP installation...

What do I need to do to get my cloned XP installation working?

I think I figured it out - it wasn't the MBR or the partition table, it was the page file (which was still designated for the old drive). With the old drive installed (thankfully the NC8000 has a multibay slot for this very purpose) I was able to boot into the new cloned system, change  the drive letter (using regedt32), reboot, then designate the page file to be on the new C:\ drive.

Would it be a good idea for Ghost to configure this for you when you clone a system drive?

I suppose it would also be good for Ghost to be able to change the system drive letter (designate your new C:\ drive) but I suppose there are technical issues regarding this...

one notable (minor) issue thus far - I seem to have lost all of my wireless profiles (had to setup a new profile for my home network, and will have to setup new profiles for all of my hotspots)...

Could these have been lost when I moved the pagefile somehow?

scotchfx,

You have done well to get the new HD working. Is the partition structure on the new HD the same as the old? Could you outline how the old HD was setup? On the old HD, was the OS on the C: or D: drive?

Did you partition the new HD before the Ghost Copy procedure?

ScotchFix and Brian:

I am facing exactly the same problem so I thank you for your solution. Unfortunately, I'm a newbie and I am not sure I follow completely.

I can boot ok using the old C:\ drive with the new drive as master as drive 1 (H:\).  The new drive is marked as Active.

Exactly what do I need to modify in the register? (What is path to Key?)

Should I have assigned a letter to the new drive or not?

My C:\ drive (old) is still marked as "System". Do I need to change this somehow?

Should I have the pagefile on the Old C:\, the new H:\, or should I go with the No Pagefile option on one or both?

Thanks
Roger

Roger,

Cloning can be a problem if you don't do everything correctly. Could you describe what you did and where the HDs are positioned in your computer? I think it's fixable.

Did you partition the new HD prior to the cloning process?
Did you remove the old HD after the cloning process?
Which Ghost do you have?

The pagefile theory is a red herring.

Hi Brian:

I have tried many different configurations. I have also had 4 'Chats'
with Symantec. They were able to get me to the 'successful DiskCopy'
stage where the C:\ drive is successfully copied to the new (Destination)
drive. I could only reach this point if I used both 'Check Disks for Errors'
options.

I'm working with Norton Save & Restore.

My C:\ drive is Master on Drive 0. The destination (H:\) is Master on Drive 1.
I tried without partitioning first but that gave me a partition the same
size as the C:\ drive and I'm trying to increase the size of that disk. I
currently am partitioning the new drive previous to DiskCopy.

I removed the old (C:\) drive and replaced it with the new (H:\) drive as
Disk 0. When I try to boot, it goes thru the first Windows Splash Screen and
gets to the second (small). This takes probably 1 minute instead of the
15 - 20 sec. This screen stays up for about 30 seconds. It then flashes
off and on again and this keeps repeating. That's why I think the problem
is that the 'new' disk is H:\. I'm guessing Windows is trying to find a
C:\ drive.

Do you think that maybe I should NOT assign a letter to the Destination
Drive ??

I think "scotchfx" was on the right track with the need to modify the
registery (somewhere). I'm not afraid to modify the registry but I don't
know where (what Key)

You may be right about the pagefile being a 'red herring'. But I was
wondering if maybe I should check the 'No pagefile' option in Windows
before I start ?

Also, the C:\ drive REMAINs the "System" drive. I was wondering if this
could be part of the problem?

Thanks

Roger

Roger,

Mo from The Simpsons would say, "Big mistake." You must copy into Unallocated Space. Have a look at..

http://radified.com/cgi-bin/YaBB/YaBB.cgi?board=general;action=display;num=11175...

I think I covered most mistakes in those threads.

You need to remove the old HD from your computer and jumper the new HD as Master. Run fdisk /mbr from a  Win98 boot floppy. You won't see anything happen when you run fdisk /mbr as it just returns to an A:\ prompt. Clearing the Disk ID will allow your OS to boot as a C: drive. (Method #3)

http://www.goodells.net/multiboot/partsigs.htm#method3

Win98 floppy from here. Get the Win98 OEM.

http://www.bootdisk.com/bootdisk.htm

If you don't have a floppy drive you can use Clear Sig from a BING CD. Let me know if you need instructions.

I am running XP Home. Do I still use the WIN98 OEM boot?

That's correct. It must be Win98.

Thank you Brian. It seems to be working just fine now.

2 questions:

1. It created the D:\ drive with skeleton directories & files:
Documents and Settings _> All Users -> etc
     program files -> etc.

Not a major problem, but I'm just curious since this is not the System Drive.

2. How can I move the pagefile from the C:\ drive to the D:\ drive. (Off topic, but I thought you might have a link)

I used to swear by all 'Norton' software up until SystemWorks2002 (and I started with Norton Utilities about 1984). Since then I have nothing but heartache with Symantec. It's only 'cause of folks like you that Symantec probaby stays in business. I hope they 'pay' you well.

Thanks again

Roger

Roger, good news.

Regarding partitions. You can partition the new HD before you clone but delete the partition that will contain the new OS prior to the cloning process. This will allow you to control the size or your OS partition.

Page files. Controversial. I leave mine on the C: drive.

http://aumha.org/win5/a/xpvm.htm

I'm confused about your D: drive. How was your old HD partitioned prior to the clone? What has changed?

We don't even get beta software to test. Maybe that's a good thing. It would limit criticism.

That was my exact first thought!

But, you are a deeper thinker than I--it never occurred to me that I (we) *might* be compromised if they offered us *beta* testing software!

This is the Acronis Beta Testing Agreement. I assume it's a standard agreement but the Confidentiality paragraph may not be in the interests of a forum like ours.

Hi Brian:

I'll take your advice and leave the pagefile on C:\

I had partitioned the new drive as H:\ and J:\ before I started so as to set the sizes I wanted. Then I did the clone from C:\ to H:\.

Use the Method #3 you recommended, I changed the strapping and moved the new drive to drive 0. Next I booted from the Win98OEM floppy and I did a fdisk /mbr on the new drive (H:\ | J:\).

I removed the floppy and rebooted. This changed the H:\ -> C:\ and the J:\ -> D:\. But, the D:\ partition has a partial structure of System Disk (but NO files).

I haven't tried to delete any of this structure yet as I thought you might have some test (?) you might want me to perform on the false structure.
