SATA drive enclosures - anybody own one?
Mar 23rd, 2007 at 8:57am

Dear esteemed Radified colleagues:
I've had a good amount of experience with IDE enclosures.  My conclusion: Only buy Macally.  Well, there may be other terrific brands, but the Macally enclosures are the least problematic by far (IMO).  I see no compatibility issues like I do with the cheap enclosures (although the Macally's are not much more expensive).

Here's my question:  Has anyone bought a SATA enclosure?  What brand?  Did you put it through its paces?  Would you recommend it?

Thank you.

cardinal23,

I have a Vantec NexStar 3 which works fine with my Dell 9150 but it experienced Delayed Write Failures with a Dell 8400 and was unusable for transferring any file over 2 GB. Vantec support was non-existent. None of my emails were answered.

SATA speed (for large files) with this enclosure is 40 MB/sec and USB speed is 25 MB/sec. I tend to use it in USB mode more often than not as to use SATA mode with my Dell I have to shutdown, enable the SATA port in the BIOS, restart. When finished with the enclosure I have to shutdown, disable the SATA port in the BIOS, restart. If I leave the empty SATA port enabled there is an error message at each restart.

I'm an eight of an inch from saying "I'm getting a Macally - even if I eat hot dogs for a few days."  I like Macallys.

MSRP=$79.99 versus $44.99 with Free Shipping from Newegg.com does not sound like hot dogs even for a day to me ... LOL !!!

Mr. Pescador,

Why do your posts above take me to http.com?  Is this some sort of devious redirect by a nefarious character (not you)?

I stripped away all the "dressing" from the old forum and now the links work for me.  Before they were double-dipping the 'http' portion of the URL.
