Norton Ghost 12 remote computer problems
May 14th, 2007 at 11:51pm

I've got ghost 12 installed on my machine and I'm try to get to a remote computer on my network.  I go to add computer and search.  It found the computer but it's asking to "enter network credentials".  From there I tried everything to logon to the remote computer (my laptop) with no luck.

username\password
ip address\username\password
and everything I could think of I tried.

I can't find a solution for it either on Symantec's site or the internet so if I could get some help, I would appreciate it.  Maybe I'm not looking good enough.

I have already read about deploying the agent on the second computer (my laptop) which is good for 30 days.  After that, you have to purchase it.

aplados,

See if this works. From Ghost 12, click Tools, Options, Settings tab. Browse to your Mapped Network Drive. Fill in your Network Credentials. OK.

Now see if you can create a Recovery Point to the laptop. Let us know what happens.

If you are connecting to a computer in a workgroup, you
should provide the remote computer name and user name.
For example: remote_computer_name\username.

It is seeing the laptop but apparently I am putting the wrong credentials in the username and password field.  I've seen different ways to put it in just my username and password does not work.  I am on a network so I viewing the help file within ghost but still no connect.

I can go to my neightborhood on both laptop and computer within XP and see each other and it's mapped.

I'll give it a try sometime after work tonight and post back.
Thanks.

Is your remote computer XP Pro?  If so, you must have a user-account name defined for any remote users that are to have access to the XP Pro pc first.

Sometimes a password is required as well.  So on the laptop add a user-account/password that matches the desktop.  Make sure the userid and password on the desktop are the same.

Then try again.

How about an example?  I've tried everything.  It's saying I will not be able to connect unless I put in the right username and password.

On the desktop I created a new user account with the same username and password as the laptop.

Everything is fine in neighborhood network.  All have full rights.

username
password

i tried this.  for example.

computer name\username\password
username\password
ipaddress\username\password

It doesn't work.

Or would I have to create the account with the computer name first?

Any help from this?

http://radified.com/cgi-bin/YaBB/YaBB.cgi?board=general;action=display;num=11207...

Before starting Ghost 12, make sure your Mapped Network drive(s) is connected and visible in Windows.

If your remote Computer Name was HJ-YJUTD, your username was "bill" and your password was "jump", then for...

Username field: you would enter  HJ-YJUTD\bill

Password field: you would enter jump

You can't use IP addresses in these fields.

Did you have your Mapped Network drive open in Windows Explorer before starting Ghost 12?

After the above, don't use the Add a computer menu.

Use Tasks, One Time Backup.
next
select your C: drive
next
click Browse and select your Mapped Drive. OK
enter your Network Credentials
next, etc

Just so I'm clear, are you trying to create an image of "my machine" and saving it to a remote computer shared folder?

Or, are you trying to create a backup image of a remote computer (that doesn't have Ghost 12 installed on it) from mymachine?

Ghost 12 as far as I know, has to be installed on the pc that you are creating the backup image of.  You can't buy just one copy of Ghost 12 and then use it to make backup images of all your computers in your network.

What I am trying to do is image the laptop since it doesnt have a dvdrw.  Want to copy it and then burn it or maybe I can burn it directly, haven't scoped it out yet enough.

Then you have to install Ghost 12 on your laptop.  Run Ghost 12 from the laptop.  You can create (store) the backup image on a different computer on your network (to a shared folder), but you have to have Ghost 12 installed on the laptop and run from the laptop.

As I understand the "remote management" feature of Ghost 12, it merely lets you trigger or monitor Ghost 12 installs on remote computers.  You still have to purchase/have 2 licenses and 2 installs of Ghost 12 if you want to use it on 2 computers.

You can also "deploy" Ghost 12 to another networked computer.  That's basically a remote install of Ghost 12.  Maybe that's what you're trying to do?
