what Ghost have you got and what do you back up onto?

I'd copy a backup image to DVD every 6 to 12 months but my heart is not in that backup.

Never mind, you are doing a good job as things stand.  Thanks for the info, interesting how and what others do.

From the above message, my suspicion is that you are having a MSI Installer problem, and not a problem with the Ghost update itself.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windows_Installer

Microsoft provides a utility called Windows Installer CleanUp Utility which can clean partial or failed installations that use the Microsoft installer (in your case the Ghost update).
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/290301

There's also an update called version 3 of the Windows Installer 3.0 Redistributable which you might want to look at.

If indeed your problem is with the partial/failed installation with MSI installer, that could explain why Symantec support isn't (but should be) familiar with it.

First and foremost here this is getting out of my league so to speak.  I am only basically knowledged in this area so bare with me if you can as some questions I ask maybe distinctly basic to you.

I am running WindowsXP/SP2 and showing in Add and Remove Windows Installer 3.1 (KB893803)

Thanks again for your interest and your post.  I agree with you my problem is one of two things, a MSI installer problem or Ghost itself as stated on the following site.

http://service1.symantec.com/support/sharedtech.nsf/docid/2005072716150213?OpenD...

From the following site given in your last post I find

http://support.microsoft.com/?id=893803

Error 1642 (ERROR_PATCH_TARGET_NOT_FOUND) is returned even if only one Windows Installer 2.0-style inapplicable patch is being applied.

Error explanation 1642
ERROR_PATCH_TARGET_NOT_FOUND 1642 The installer cannot install the upgrade patch because the program being upgraded may be missing or the upgrade patch updates a different version of the program. Verify that the program to be upgraded exists on your computer and that you have the correct upgrade patch.

From your next site given in your last post I find the following:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=5fbc5470-b259-4733-a914...

System Requirements
Windows XP Service Pack 2 contains Windows Installer 3.0 and therefore can't be installed or upgraded by this redistributable.

Question?  If you think it is the MSI Installer problem can it be uninstalled from Add and Remove and reinstalled like most programs that have become corrupted so to speak.

kind regards,

I don't think you can uninstall/reinstall the MSI Installer.  I just opened my Add/Remove Programs from my control panel, and it wasn't there. I think if you wanted to install the MIS Installer 3.1 it would just install on top of the 3.0 version.  However, I wouldn't even try to update to 3.1 if you already have 3.0.

Again, if everything is working great, you can always just wait.

However, what you could do now is to download and install the Windows Installer Cleanup utility and then run it.  It gives you a list of software that has been installed.  Note, when I run the program, it lists Norton Ghost 10.03.0.20387.  If I had previously uninstalled Ghost and I STILL saw it in this list, I would select that entry and let the Utility remove the fragments for it.  (If you don't select anything or tell it to remove anything, nothing is done.)

In your case, just look for something unusual that you thought had already been uninstalled or looked suspicious.

I just think that there is something left-over from previous attempts at the update patch install and that's why it keeps failing.

The Installer Cleanup Utility is just to help give you clues as to what might be wrong.  I think you mentioned you didn't want to un-install and then re-install Ghost, so if that's still true, running the Utility may not ultimately help.  Just give you some ideas.

Thanks for your post.

As mentioned in my last post in Add and Remove I am running Windows Installer 3.1 (KB893803)

I have run Installer Cleanup Utility and it shows nothing in there that needs to be uninstalled.

There are these two following entries that could help you, but I do not know what they are for!

ALL USERS SYMANTEC KB-Doc ID 2003093015493306 (1.0.0.1)
ALL USERS SYMANTEC Technical Support Web Controls (3.1.0)

I don't have either of those listed in mine.

However I looked up the first one (ALL USERS SYMANTEC KB-Doc ID 2003093015493306 (1.0.0.1) )with Google and found this:
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/nav.nsf/docid/2003093015493306
Looks like it is related to activation.

ALL USERS SYMANTEC Technical Support Web Controls (3.1.0) [/quote]
I don't know what this one is, but it sounds like it might be some sort of remote-control software that Symantec uses to remotely take over your pc to diagnose problems.  Maybe you had tech support do that.

Bottom line I still don't know exactly what is wrong. The only way to really clean it up (if you want to do this):

0. First take a good independent backup image with Ghost 10 and verify it.
1. Uninstall Ghost 10
2. Run Norton Removal Tool
3. Run Windows Installer Cleanup tool and cleaup any leftover Symantec, Norton entries.
4. Use Windows Explorer and Windows search function to manually look for folders that have Symantec, Norton, etc in them and delete them.
5. Reinstall Ghost 10
6. Run Live Update to update Ghost to 10.03

Good to get your advice -

No, Symantec have never taken over my system to correct anything, I know what you mean, and use Logmein from time to time, but it is nothing to do with Symantec.

The Activation item - well I have no idea about it.

Yes, you are correct about your "Bottom line."  On June 5th after E:\Drive (Ghost Drive) has been successfully transferred to a new HD by my technician to see if this image software does really work, he will then uninstall and reinstall Ghost hoping the problem will be fixed.

I have printed out your "Bottom Line" method to give to him to see if that will be his method in finally correcting the error.

Thanks again for your time and effort.

Hi,

Just an update on your advice to me earlier today.

I have successfully followed your "Bottom line" advice and all is now well.  Live Update worked well with version 10.0.3.20387 of Ghost 10 installed.

ALL USERS SYMANTEC Technical Support Web Controls (3.1.0)  was left installed after I ran Nortons Removal Tool, but I deleted it when running Windows Installer clean up tool.

Activation was accomplished easily, so all is now well that ends well.

I would like to thank you so much for all your help.  Now I have more confidence with the program if it happens again I will know what to do.

Does this site take donations?

All the best to you, I hope Brian reads this as he did ask me to post back with results of my visit to my tech on 5th June.

best regards,  Wink

Tallin, so glad to hear you got it working.  Sometimes a "clean" install is the only way to get things going again.  Symantec created that Norton-Removal-Tool because their normal uninstall unfortunately doesn't always remove everything.  The manual removal of the folders helps ensure you don't have any leftovers before the reinstall.

Hi Again,

Thought I was out of trouble but find the message below in Event log.

I have tried twice to "Backup Now" all goes smoothly until near the end of the hour with the following message:

Quote:
Description: Error EC8F17B7: Cannot create recovery points for job: Recovery point of C:\. Error EA390719: Target disk full.
Details: 0xEA390719
Source: Norton Ghost

Further research on Symantec's Technical site as follows:

Quote:
Error: "Error EC8F17B7: Cannot create recovery points for job: Recovery point of C:\"When you schedule an incremental backup or as the backup takes place, you see one or more of the following error messages:

"Error EC8F17B7: Cannot create recovery points for job: Complete System Backup"

Quote:
Several causes exist for these messages:

Hard drive problems, such as file system errors or bad sectors
To prevent this problem, make sure that you check the option "Ignore bad sectors during copy" while the Backup Wizard is in progress.
Multiple USB devices that are connected to the computer  ( I have my webcam only)
Disconnect all devices except for the USB destination hard drive.

The E:\Drive is not full, it is set as follows:

Optimize Recovery Point Storage

Used space 111.698.202.624. bytes (104.0GB)
Free Space 48.341.037.056 bytes (45.0GB)

Capacity: 160.039.239.680GB Ghost E:\ Drive
Space Used for recovery point storage 0 bytes 0 bytes

Options

Storage Location E:\Drive
Space currently used for recovery points storage 0 bytes

Have Enabled monitor disk space usage for recovery points storage.
Threshold amount of disk space to use for recovery storage 105.8 GB

Automatically Optimize Storage Enabled

Also following the manual in troubleshooting I have been into Services and although Nortons Ghost was showing on Automatic, I restarted it.  (When I did this I saw in systems tray a notification from Ghost that "Cannot connect with Agent"
I then restarted in Services again but did not get that same notice.

In Systems Tray the ghostie icon is "Nortons Ghost is ready"

There are currently no recovery points in Storage location Ghost Drive (E:\)
All were lost in the reinstall although I remember enabling during reinstall to save them.

I think  (that is only my opinion) my manual deletion of all Folders referring to Symantec/Nortons during the process of uninstall and reinstall wiped those Recovery points.  You comments please.

I do have one independent full backup image verified and sitting on my desktop (25GB) and yes I know if my hard disk should fail I am in real trouble, but when I saved  before the uninstall and reinstall I was glad I put it there and not in E:\Drive.  This I know is not recommended, but other than putting it on E:\ where else could I have put it?

If help can be offered I would most appreciate it

kind regards,

Is there any way you can free up more space on E:?  Ghost won't delete an old recovery point until it finishes storing the new one, so you need lots of space.  Plus ideally you would want to have at least 2 or 3 complete recovery points on the drive.

Thanks for your reply.

Since I posted earlier to you I had to go out, but before I left I decided to defrag E:\.  What a shock I got.  I will post within this thread the result as there is no attachment option that I can see.

How do I free more space on E\ Drive please, I have tried everything I understand to do this.

Why would E\Drive be so fragmented and why will it not defrag properly I wonder?

Maybe Brian knows what's going on.  I'm not sure but:

When you uninstalled Ghost and used the Norton Removal Tool, I think your Ghost-catalog was also deleted.  So, after you re-install Ghost, it is not going to recognize or acknowledge any of the old Recovery Points in the catalog. (You could still do an emergency restore using them, but they're not known I don't think)

Personally, I would delete everything in E:\Ghost Points\ folder and create a new definition from scratch.

Also, start/run/cmd and then chkdsk e: /f to run chkdsk on e:

Any other ideas or suggestions Brian?
