Can't Log Into Windows After Disk Copy - NG12
Jun 2nd, 2007 at 10:18pm

I successfully (I thought) completed the 'Copy My Hard Drive' using NG version12.0 to copy my exising 80G boot drive (C) to a new 320G boot drive.  I did not allocate space or anything before I did the copy.  After the copy I shut down my computer - unplugged the 'old' drive - plugged my 'new' drive in as the primary master and restarted my computer.
I get the Windows Logon Screen with my username and I enter my password.  Before I even see my wallpaper or get the Windows Message that it is 'Loading My Personal Setting" , I get the Windows Message - 'Windows Is Logging Off'... This takes a few minutes and then the Windows Logon Screen appears again.
I performed all tasks with Administrator rights and trying to log on with other usernames produces the same results.
Anyone have any idea?

Nvr2bogy,

These are classic symptoms of a drive letter issue. Method #3 should allow your OS to boot. Do you have a floppy drive? If not there are CD alternatives.

http://www.goodells.net/multiboot/partsigs.htm#method3

When you performed the "Copy" did you clone into a partition or into unallocated space?

Hi Brian,

My floppy drive does not work - tried to use it today for the first time in about 3 years -  Angry...  So obviously I can't use a Windows 98 Startup Disk.

I copied into unallocated space.

Any instructions on how to use a CD?

Try this.

Quote:
http://www.acronis.com/files/support/mbrautowrite_en.iso

Download the .ISO and burn it (as an image, not as data) to a CD.
Boot to the CD. You will see "Press any key to rewrite MBR". Press a key and you will be instructed to "Press ENTER to reboot" so remove the CD and press ENTER. It should boot to WinXP.

Sounds like you did everything correctly. Cloned into unallocated space and swapped HDs appropriately. Let us know how the CD goes.

Thanks Brian - that procedure worked.

For those not familiar with 'burning an image' as I was not, I used a trial version of UltraISO (http://www.ezbsystems.com/ultraiso).  It worked great and easy.

Unfortunately, after I got everything working again I noticed that the 'allocated size' of the new drive was the size of the old drive because I had forgotten to select the option 'Resize drive to fill unallocated space' during the 'Copy My Hard Drive' in NG 12.0... Undecided

Instead of using any of the repartitioning products, I decided to start from the beginning - the copy was only about 30 minutes.  After swapping my old drive back to the primary, I used Disk Administration to 'delete' the partition on the new drive and started the NG 12. 0 process.  This time I picked the right options and everything worked fine, I did not even need to re-write the MBR.  No idea what I did differently, but it was 2:00am and I attributed it to gremlins  Roll Eyes

All is well - thanks for your help.

Nvr2bogy,

Thanks for the feedback. I don't know where you made the mistake either. It sounds like you have read the links below. They were written for Ghost 9/10 but they apply to Ghost 12 as well. There are several different ways the drive letter issue can manifest. Your login failure seems the least common. The most common is freezing on a blue screen with a small WinXP logo and no text.

You can try using magiciso to burn iso file to cd. It works great.

To change the size of an existing partition on hard disk
here is a free software called QtPartED.
available free as a bootable CD from:

http://www.sysresccd.org

to use it down load the CD ISO image, burn it to a CD-R
boot from the cd at the prompt just type:

run_qtparted

and press enter on the keyboard.
enter mouse number (PS/2 is 3)
and you get a partition Magic in GUI (graphical user interface) in linux.
it is exactley like partition magic in DOS;and supports all file systems
including NTFS,FAT,FAT32,EXT3.
..........................................
this tool is also available on KNOPPIX the Live Linux Boot CD
use the Menu (system tools)
..................................................
I think this second time you had the correct MBR on the new HDD already.
I would hang on to that ISO in case you change your Hard disk again.
