Here is the change log for BESR 7.01.

http://ftp.support.veritas.com/pub/support/products/Backup_Exec_for_WindowsNT/29...

It doesn't look particularly relevant to our needs.

Interesting, Brian - we posted the same link to the same document, all within 60 seconds of each other!

Just proof positive that “great minds think alike”!   Wink

My version of Ghost 12 is 12.0.1.21822, so I'm guessing an update must have been made, though I have no clue what was added/fixed, etc, can't find it on Symantec's website, anyone know what this latest update included?

No.  After reading your post, I ran LiveUpdate and my Ghost 12 updated to the same version (12.0.1.21822).

It has been an ongoing problem with Symantec and Ghost xx updates.  They never say what was fixed, enhanced, broken, or added.  If anyone has a clue why that appears to be the Symantec corporate policy for Ghost, please let me know.

Ghost4me, yes, it is odd that Symantec doesn’t disclose the change log for Norton Ghost updates, especially given the fact that it does so for Backup Exec System Recovery.

On a separate theme, can you kindly examine and post the properties of “C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\SymSnap.sys” for Norton Ghost 12?  I am curious whether Symantec is still using the StorageCraft ‘hot imaging’ driver - and, if so, whether the version has been updated since Norton Ghost 10.

That's the difference between Symantec's corporate products and their response for consumer products, I would guess.

symsnap.sys (Ghost 12 on Vista home premium system):
Ver 6.0.1.21380
size 131,808 bytes
size on disk 135,168 bytes

Thanks, Ghost4me.  Do the SymSnap driver properties (Norton Ghost 12) still list "StorageCraft" as the copyright owner of the software, too?

StorageCraft Corporation make ShadowProtect.

http://www.storagecraft.com/products/ShadowProtectDesktop/

I'm using the Trial version at present. It's interesting and quite similar to Ghost 12 which I guess is not surprising considering the shared technology. Unlike Ghost 12, you can create images from the recovery environment.

Brian, I’m also investigating the ShadowProtect 3.0 product - although I have yet to download and install an evaluation copy.  When you have a moment, please start a new thread and post your observations on this tool.

I agree that ShadowProtect appears to be highly similar to Norton Ghost 9/10/12, based upon my reading of the User’s Guide.

Ghost4me, thanks for verifying that Norton Ghost 12 is still using technology that was developed by StorageCraft.

Ghost4me, the SymSnap driver for Norton Ghost 12 has been updated, relative to Norton Ghost 10:

File:  C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\SymSnap.sys (for Norton Ghost 10)
File version:  4.1.0.16040
Size on disk:  147,456 bytes
