4 hours with norton ghost support and nothing
Oct 9th, 2007 at 7:01pm

I have a fairly new computer (3 weeks) and have just been trying to be anal about keeping it clean.   As i got a blue screen i decided to revert.   I decided to try to revert to a time previous to the problem occurring.   After reverting, windows would not start.   I tried a couple of other recovery points around that date but all would lead to windows not starting.

I was selecting the recovery points by date which i now realize might be a mistake as it does not give you options nor were all the recovery points being shown.  After some hours with tech support i realized on my own that it is better if i choose recovery points by file name as this gives me options to choose from.  Unfortunately, by the time  i realized this, the support guy told me to delete the parition which made no longer possible to restore anything to drive.

I am not sure what to do or why it didn't work.

I have the entire chat session if anyone is interested.

NYConsume,

Nasty. Just a few questions.

What brand computer?
How many HDs?
How many partitions?
Which partition was deleted?
Where do you keep your recovery points?
How many BSODs did you experience?
Was there an error message when the computer wouldn't boot?
Could you enter Safe Mode?
Which OS? Vista or WinXP?
Have you run HD diagnostics and tested the RAM?
Did you restore like this?

Thank you for your reply.

Just to keep in mind, the computer wasn't in very bad shape.   I had gotten 2 blue screens of death a couple of day before trying to recover but i was working on networking stuff.   There were some errors, so i just wanted to pinpoint what was causing them by reverting.

>What brand computer?
I put it together myself:
q6600 4Gigs Crucial ram Asus P5K deluxe motherboard
Coolermaster Cosmos case
V1 cpu cooler

>How many HDs?
4 500 gig Hitachi Sata Hard drives

>How many partitions?
on main drive (none-is this a mistake?)   I plan to only use it for operating system and programs.

>Which partition was deleted?
only one partition

>Where do you keep your recovery points?
on a seperate harddrive

>How many BSODs did you experience?
after one recovery it happened 3 times (each pretty quickly after a restart.)

>Was there an error message when the computer wouldn't boot?
Different ones depending on the recovery point I used.

>Could you enter Safe Mode?
No

>Which OS? Vista or WinXP?
Vista ultimate

>Have you run HD diagnostics and tested the RAM?
I tested the Ram.
Checkdisc within ghost seem to indicate there were some problems.
I am reinstalling everything.   What diagnostics do you recommend I use to check if HD's are good.

At first no, I chose from date, which doesn't give you any options.  At some point I came across the above url and started to restore like that.

Good luck with the install. The HD manufacturer's websites have free diagnostics downloads.

Was it the OS partition? That shouldn't have been a problem.

Can you recall the wording?
