This is licensed code, and not freeware. You still need a GSS1.1 license to use this legally. Why anyone would imagine otherwise is frankly beyond me.

I think the message could have been worded differently. I have licensed copies of GSS 2.1 and found out about the new release only when I signed on here. Glad we have this board to keep us informed.  Smiley

Of course, if you read the official forums, you'd get that too (just without the encouragement to pirate the product). We post announcements about new versions and LiveUpdates regularly there.

By the way, since the signature link now points at the 2.5 installer, it's worth noting that the ELS license keys for this are different to the 2.0 ones. It's a new major version, and not a free update.

Glad you pointed the licensing issue. I am not sure if it is clear in the announcement.

Obviously the new release has enhancements. Before buying a new enterprise license, especially for small users ~ 5 licenses, we may like to know the enhancements which may be of value which would justify the upgrade. Most small users tend to stay with a stable software and upgrade when there is a substantial payback. Would welcome feedback on this aspect which will help a lot of users to decide upgrading.

Somewhere between 11.0.2 build1573 and this latest version support for external firewire drives has been broken.

Just had to drag and drop back to the earlier version of ghost.exe onto the DOS bootable USB flash drive in order to get it working again so this is clearly an issue with 11.5.0 booting from DOS...totally broken therefore I will not be upgrading or using FWIW...

No matter what switch I attempt to use ghost 11.5.0 will no longer recognize my external firewire drive.  Considering that the DOS version 11.5.0 has now swelled to 2.20 MB up from the 1.83 MB of 11.0.2 makes me wonder if this was an intended feature.

Anyways...sticking with 11.0.2 since 11.5.0 no longer supports Firewire in DOS...

BTW:  The WinPE bootable format is a nice option but just to slow and bloated for me to use a bootable CD or USB with this format...

somms,

How long does your CD and USB flash drive take to boot into the VistaPE? You mentioned it was slow.

Couple minutes...

With ver11.0.2, the bootable USB drive used consisted of the following files taking up only 2.05MB of space (MOUSE.COM isn't even required) and boots in seconds:

Code:

AUTOEXEC.BAT
COMMAND.COM
GHOST.EXE
IO.SYS
MOUSE.COM

For ver11.5.0 to see external firewire drives you are now forced to use WinPE which eats 138MB and takes minutes to boot! Tongue

BTW:  The image I did a test restore with WinPE 11.5.0 failed with an internal error...DOS bootable 11.0.2 imaged correctly w/o error...

Linux bootable USB version of ghost boots alot quicker than the WinPE but still not as quick as DOS version...Linux Thin Client UI leaves alot to be desired as well...

somms,

As your WinPE was 138 MB I assume you didn't tick "Deploy Anywhere Driver Database with the image." Paradoxically, if you include the drivers the boot time is halved. Less than a minute with a USB flash drive. Maybe you don't want to, but you could run your Ghost 11.0.2 from the bootable media. As a test, I ran Ghost 8, IFW, A43 and Drive Snapshot.
