Cant get xp cd to install
Apr 12th, 2008 at 4:06pm

Can anyone help me reinstall xp on newly formatted HD, I keep getting "Boot from CD-Rom:...Failure. I've reformatted the HD using MAX-BLAST, It's a small (20G) drive, and the pc reads from my GEEK SQUAD Utilites disc, but it won't boot from the XP CD. I did set the bios to CD as first boot device. HELP anyone!! It's my wife's CPU, and I don't want her touching mine!! If I install Win98 first, do I need to format as FAT32 or NTSF? Then I can upgrade to XP?

If you install Win98 first, you'll have to format as Fat.  Win98 can't read NTFS.  It sounds to mee like you have a bad CD.  Will any other computers read the same CD?

You may want to try this procedure (as I had a similar problem, tho' using Partition Magic 8 & it worked)- boot from a CD/Floppy that has the Win ME or Win 98SE edition of FDISK. Delete the (primary) partition you want to install Windows on. Reboot & go back again to FDISK. Now, create a new partition in the available space. Set it active & re-boot to ensure it has been created. Then format it. All this is using FDISK.
Now boot using the Windows XP install CD & Windows should start install normally. On the way, there will be an option to stay with FAT32 or convert to NTFS.

Problem (IMO) may have been incompatibility on account of MaxBlast.
