Apr 21st, 2008 at 12:55pm

Hi guys. I created a ghost 2003 using nightowl's method. When I ichose the option not to create a cd/dvd bootable disk and burn my first image of my laptop on a cd, it didn't boot and when I check the image there's only a .gho file on there does it suppose to put a ghost exe on a cd?

Do you mean you created an image with Ghost 2003?

I'm not following you. You say you didn't make the CD bootable and it didn't boot. What did you expect?

That's what I would expect.

No. That's what you have NightOwl's bootable CD for. Launch Ghost from there.

Typically, if Ghost is run from a Boot Disk, Ghost will put itself and all the boot information from the boot disk on the CD/DVD ONLY if the original boot up was done from a floppy disk.  That's the way Ghost 2003 was written, way back in the days when it was assumed that every PC had a floppy disk drive on it. (and most DID! )

I too, have the ability to use Ghost 2003 from a boot CD and even a boot Flash Drive, but Ghost will NOT offer to make the resulting DVD bootable.

To use the Ghost image on the DVD, I must once again boot up with the original boot disk.  That's not my favorite method to use Ghost.
I only boot from CD or Flash Drive if I'm going to make a Quickie backup to another hard drive.

An easy way to get around that today, on computers with NO floppy drive, is to use a "USB Floppy Drive".

If I'm going to make a Ghost Image to DVD, I will absolutely boot up my system with my Ghost 2003 boot floppy.
I won't build a computer without at least one Floppy Disk Drive installed.

Most new systems today, will accept the USB Floppy Drive as if it were an internally connected drive.
Since that drive comes up as drive "A:", Ghost is happy with that and will accept that as the source of the boot files to put on the DVD.

Unless your OS is, "Stripped To The Bone" I'd not advise using CD's to receive the Ghost Image.  For the typical HD it would take a STACK of CD's to hold a Ghost Image, even using HIGH compression.

If you can't use DVD's then an external HD would be the next best choice.

Good Luck,

I thought by making a creating Bootable CD/DVD's (Ghost 2003)Without A:\Floppy Drive by Nightowl I can use it to my laptop, and ghost will make my first image bootable. As The Shadow explain the only way my first image to be bootable are either use a USB Floppy Drive and assuming an external floppy drive will work am I correct?. It's obviously I'am new on using ghost. It's just that I want to make  unattended Ghost 2003 cd/dvd with an image or clone of the Win xp pro. on it that will setup itself to any pc in my school. I happened to clone one HDD using acronis  to my external HDD that's not been set up yet, that's where I plan to put Ghost on it. The way our pcs' are setup when it's still new in a box, it must be connectedt to the lan network before you can turn it on or else it will not join the domain and from there its completely unattended. That's why is it possible to make a ghost out of it? And how? I don't expect you to give the the instructions a link will be be good. :') thank you.
