Please help!  Norton Ghost 10 backup problem
May 6th, 2008 at 12:27am

Hello,

I am glad to have found this forum.  Would someone please help me?  I have tried on numerous occasions to back up my F: drive.  I USED to not have any probs with it, but now I keep getting the following:

-Error EC8F17B7: Cannot create recovery points for job: Recording Studio_Games:\.
--Error E7C3000F: Device \\.\SymantecSnapshot0 cannot read 4104 sectors starting at LBA 15777256.
---Error EBAB03F1: Data error (cyclic redundancy check).

I have a dual boot Dell Latitude 1100, with Win2K SP4 on the C partition and WinXP SP2 on the F drive.  I also have Windows Recovery console.  I have performed a checkdisk on Drive F from the recovery console, from Win2K and from WinXP, and I am still having no success.

I would appreciate any help possible.  The F drive is my main livelihood.

Thanks

George

George,

Did chkdsk report any bad sectors? Have you run the manufacturers Disk Diagnostics?

Doesn't look good. I'd get the data from that partition backed up by copy and paste. Just in case.

George,

Can you create an image (recovery point) if you select "Ignore bad sectors during copy?"

Be sure you are using the /r switch for chkdsk (not the /f) switch.  Open the command prompt and then:

chkdsk f: /r

Chkdsk will read every sector with this switch and flag any bad sectors as unusable.

Hello everyone, and thanks for all the input:

Brian - I was able to get a ghost image after selecting "Ignore bad sectors during copy".  It reported 1 bad sector, Info 67C30018.  This was even after running the Symantec Recovery CD and running it through Norton Disk Doctor.  I also saved the partition info from the Recovery CD, and here is the output:

================================================================================
===========================
Disk Geometry Information for Disk 1:    2432 Cylinders,  255 Heads,  63 Sectors/Track
System              PartSect  # Boot BCyl Head Sect  FS    ECyl Head Sect    StartSect     NumSects
================================================================================
===========================
                          0  0  80     0    1    1  07    1023  254   63           63   19,551,042
Info: End C,H,S values were large drive placeholders.
  Actual values are:
       0  0  80      0    1    1  07   1216  254   63        63  19551042
                          0  1  00  1023    0    1  07    1023  254   63   19,551,105   19,518,975
Info: Begin C,H,S values were large drive placeholders.
Info: End C,H,S values were large drive placeholders.
  Actual values are:
       0  1  00   1217    0    1  07   2431  254   63  19551105  19518975

Question, is the problem really 1 bad sector as reported by Ghost, or is it a difference between the reported vs the actual values of the partition info?  Should I change the 1023 to 1216 in the first partition and the 1023 to 1217 in the second?

Also, since I have a 'successful' image created, I am scared to test it by restoring it over my current partition, which, incidentally works fine.

What would you suggest?

George

By the way, the first partition listed is my C: drive, which ghosts fine.  The one in question, with the bad sector is the second partition, the F: drive, which does have an image with the 1 bad sector.

Thanks

Thanks to everyone for your help.  This thread is closed!!

Peace, out.
