Error Message at beginning of backup

I just installed 2003 on a laptop running Windows XP Home Ed. After a successful CD installation, I wanted to run a first test backup. Upon clicking on the last "Run Now" button....the following error occurred:
Unable to find a free MBR slot in the virtual partition DLL. This is usually due to there being no free primary partition slots left on the boot disk.
Can someone help me solve this? thanks, G_man

G_Man49,
When you look in Disk Management, how many partitions do you have on the laptop HD?

Sure. Right click My Computer, Manage, Disk Management.
How many partitions are on Disk 0? Some may not have drive letters.

86 mb FAT
3.5 Gb for Media Direct FAT 32
2.5 Gb for something else FAT 32
105 Gb NTSF

G_Man49,
There is your answer. All 4 partition slots are in use. You need to have only 3 in use. If you don't use MediaDirect, you could delete that partition.
PS: Which OS are you using? Deleting MediaDirect may cause boot problems.

Brian ,
I'm using XP Home. I'd like to keep Media Direct (5 laptops going to Costa Rica school as donation). I wanted to have Ghost on them...so when the kids screw them up...no problema). Any way to identify the 3.30 gb partition?

The 86 MB partition is your Dell Diagnostic partition. It can be deleted and diagnostics run from the CD.
The 2.5 GB partition is a Restore partition. Probably worth keeping as it restores the computer to the day it was shipped. But on the other hand, if you delete the Diagnostic partition, the Restore partition won't work. This can be fixed.
If you delete a partition you may need to edit boot.ini to get Windows to boot. It depends on which partition slot WinXP occupies. Disk Management doesn't show partition slots, only physical order on the HD.
Overall, it would be easier to image/restore from boot media than make partition changes.
