Please HELP-Norton Ghost 14 cannot connect to agent

I have had this for almost a month now. I setup a base line backup on dvds. I then did another baseline on external hard drive with settings to update (check points to these location).  Last week I got an error that Norton could not connect to agent. I tried to manually reconnect and it stops at about 2 bars to go. I then rebooted and was unable access the Window XP Home OS. It would just show windows xp splash startup screen then reboot, then show windows splash screen then reboot. I tried to do last known good config and start in safe mode with same results.  Luckily,  I had a checkpoint back that was only 9 days old. SO I got the system back up and running. I just received the error again that Norton cannot connect to agent.  don't want to reboot again and have this crash my system again. Is there any ideas as to why I keep getting errors. Is it that I am using usb to save information as opposed to an internal hard drive?
