i built a new computer. motherboard has only one place to plug in ata cable ( which will support 2 devices ) and two sata places to plug in.
i bought a Samsung external DVD writer model SE-S204. it works with windows, but g 2003 does not recognize it.
i am looking for a ghost 2003 compatible external usb DVD burner.

I don't think Ghost 2003 was far enough along when DVD writers were first coming out--don't think there's any that I can think of that work with Ghost 2003!

One complication is a matter of command sets; when the USB Mass Storage class specification was put together, the relevant committees had to choose the command sets used by software to talk to the USB-connected devices.
There were a lot of choices available in terms of how to define the Mass Storage category of USB devices and how to talk to them. What they chose was basically not to make a choice; they allowed USB mass storage devices to pick themselves from one of six different sets of commands, one kind of SCSI and one based on ATAPI and one for flash memory and a new one they made up for floppy devices and another for tape and ... each one is different.
So even though SCSI-based optical drives have been around forever, and the ATAPI command set was based on SCSI in the first place, the way things have ended up is that most USB optical drives are built to use the command set based on the ATAPI one...
...whereas the USB drivers for DOS use a programming interface designed for SCSI, and try and adapt the SCSI command set to whatever the mass storage device uses (sensible since SCSI is the most general kind of thing). For non-SCSI devices, that adaptation typically only handles the basic set used by hard disks, but typically doesn't include the special commands used to write optical devices.

thank you for reply.
i am giving up on external usb dvd burner.
different problem.
i am able to burn an image to a DVD with g 3 using internal DVD writer. using g3 standard boot disk, but when i try to write to same internal dvd burner over my network using g3 network boot disks, i am unable to do so.
g3 does not show the burner as one of the destination choices.
ideas ?

I can't find the reference, but I think you can only use Ghost 2003 to write to an optical writer locally--not across a network.
