DHCP error when trying to push image
Dec 2nd, 2008 at 2:46pm

I'm using Symantec Ghost Console v 11.0.0.1502

We've used it for the past several years: have already used it to create and push images.  Do NOT use DHCP, static IPs only (it's a local configuration thing).

Suddenly today when trying to push an image I get the following (after scheduling the CLONE task and the client reboots to PC-DOS):
"Network initialization failed: the DOS-mode client cannot proceed
Unable to obtain IP address via DHCP"

Tried searching this site for DHCP errors as well as the Symantec site with no results...unless I actually used DHCP.  But I don't have a DHCP server so that's out.

Not sure what additional info I might provide, so if you have an idea and are inclined to help, let me know what else I need to tell you.  And thanks for any help.

Unfortunately, I don't have an answer for your question--but this appears to be a question related to DOS based Ghost and Ghost Solution Suite (GSS)--you might get noticed better in this forum.

@Nightowl
I admit I don't know Ghost through and through, but this is not a DOS issue per se...the only way I have ever seen Ghost work was to reboot the client into PC-DOS mode and then pull or push an image.

@Radmeister
Yes, Symantec is running on a Win2K3 server.  Clients are uniformly XP SP3.

At the very least, it would be a smart idea to LiveUpdate the GSS console to the current version. For that series, LiveUpdate will download an installer for 11.0.2.1573, which you then need to apply to your console. That includes new client software, that will be pushed out to the clients as tasks run. The first thing to work out is whether that software resolves this

For people who run static IPs (where in most circumstances it's better to still have a DHCP server present, and manually assign the MAC->IP address bindings in the DHCP server for the "static" IPs) the management console client has to detect which one of the network interfaces on the client machine it is using to communicate to the server. Then it has to propagate that static information down into the DOS environment that it builds on the fly.

Presumably, something on the client has happened which is stopping that process; there are some insanely overcomplex things you can do with the Windows TCP/IP stack via static configuration (e.g. multiple static IPs per network adapter, which isn't supported in DOS environments) and after you LiveUpdate everything it will be necessary to dig into those.
