Fails to boot from Ghost 2003 boot CD

I have made a ghost 2003 boot CD under the guide of Nightowl's tutorial, and burnt it with Nero 6. But after I changed the boot order of my thindpad t60 and restarted, the system entered DRDOS. I just can't figure out what's the problem.

And I encoutered the same problem with my Linux installation boot CD.

Could anyone kindly tell me where I am wrong?

Well, there's Nero...and then there's Nero--it comes in multiple *flavors* depending on whether you have the program from purchasing an optical drive and the *oem* version was bundled with it--or you purchased the retail version.

The *oem* versions typically are *lite* versions with certain features either missing or disabled. I have such a version and it's actually called *NeroExpress v6.xxxx*. I have never worked with the retail *full* version--but it may come with a wizard driven mode where the program tries to help a user perform certain tasks without the user having to understand what's going on in the background.

I'm guessing, but your description of your bootable disc loading *DrDOS* is similar to my OEM NeroExpress--it has a built-in optical disc boot image file that is loaded by Nero when I use Nero's option to create a bootable optical disc. That boot image has the DOS version of DrDOS that it utilizes. And NeroExpress will not allow selecting a boot image of your own making or choosing--at least not without doing a work-around to by-pass NeroExpress' boot image.

So, what version of Nero are you using?

What steps are you using to indicate what boot image file Nero is supposed to use to create a bootable optical disc--it looks like Nero is defaulting to its own boot image file?

Maybe you are right, I suspect it's the *OEM* version of Nero 6. Following your guide, today I replaced 'DosBootimage.ima' with the Ghost boot image, then started Nero. Unfortunately, at the 'Select a boot image' dialogue screen, there is no alternative, only the option of 'reading a floppy boot disk'.

Then I deleted the pseudo 'DosBootimage.ima' and recovered the build-in image. When coming back to the dialogue screen, I could select the 'build-in Nero's boot image' option. At that time, make the *underground routine*, and everything is OK.

Nero is really smart. It can detect pseudo build-in image! Yet people will always find the *right* way. Thank you indeed, NightOwl. I really learned a lot from your tutorial.

Just a suggestion:

Nero 6 was good for Windows 98, but it's getting VERY old.

I bought Nero Pro many years ago and I've kept it up to date ever since.
To date, my favorite version is Nero 8.
It's just much more compatible with XP, Vista and Win-7.
And, it will let you pick the boot files from whatever bootable disk you have in your system, even a bootable Flash Drive. (my favorite)

After many failures along the way and having read many options on this very forum, I decided to set up Ghost and everything I needed on a USB Flash Drive (thumb drive).
With that done and running the way I wanted it, I then used Nero 8 to burn the image of that Flash Drive to a CD. Then, the CD boots up just like the flash drive did.

Since then, I've used the same technique to create several other boot CD's, to run some of my diagnostics that need to run in DOS.

None of this would be possible, without the information I've gleaned from this forum. Thanks Guys! Wink
