How to use Boot Wizard in Ghost Solution Suite 2.5?
Jun 28th, 2009 at 8:07am

I downloaded GSS 2.5 and notice a lot of choices for bootable CD and USB Flash drives but my question is which option to choose to create network drive mapping CD or Flash drive?
I tried doing this with USB Drive but when I get to choice to choose the USB drive it shows it as being in use already.

I need to figure this out before work tomorrow morning as I need to image several machines 1st thing.

Please help....

Thanks

Patrick

This usually means you have another program open that you have used to access the USB device--such as Windows Explorer or My Computer/Explore.  Redirect the focus of those type of programs away from the USB device, or close those programs.  If your system fails to automatically refresh after doing one of those choices, try unplugging and replugging in the USB drive.

I'm not a GSS 2.5 user--not many folks here are--but looking at the Implementation Guide--there appears to be only one choice for that in the Ghost Boot Wizard--with lots of options to choose from to complete the boot *package*:  Ghost Solution Suite v2.5 Implementation Guide, page #273

Ghost is a complicated program--very *powerful* programs usually are.  If you're not familiar with its use and functions, you have a steep learning curve ahead of you!  But, using a network and mapped drives is a whole new level of complexity if you are not familiar with how that works!  It's all doable, but there's no one size fits all when it comes to networking--you have to select the options that are appropriate to your environment!

We may be able to help with specific trouble shooting questions, but you have to know how to use your particular system(s).

Let us know if this helps.

Thanks for the reply.

I am downloading the guide file now.

I am familiar with ghost but I always used floppies, and always had problems getting bootable CD's or USB drives to work with ghost.

There's so many versions out there and different boot wizard options in each, it makes your eyes cross!!!

Thanks again

If you know how to set up mapped networking on floppies, then use the exact same settings in the GSS 2.5 Boot Wizard--but when you're asked to select the destination device for the boot package--select either the iso file so you can burn it to optical media--or, the removable media USB flash drive if that's the better choice--I'd make both!

Let us know how it goes!

I tried the USB again and the error is not that it is in use, the error is this:

The Drive is Currently Write Protected.
Remove Write protection or select another drive.

Only shows after unchecking show only removable devices

Why would it say a USB flash drive is write protected...I have never gotten that before and it is not write protected.

Also with GSS 2.5 I dont get any option to enter username\password\drive letter or path to map to.

UGHHHHHHHHH

I am getting so frustrated with this....

THanks

Well, that's a different problem!  Google might be your friend:  usb write protected.

Seems like there are potentially multiple potential reasons for this!  Apparently some USB devices do have a *switch* to write--protect them--but, I've never seen one of those!

Did you try creating an *iso* boot package for optical disc--if you can complete the process, are you asked for that info eventually?

Or, try making the std floppy boot disks--does the process eventually ask for that info?

Oh, oh....is this a licensed version?  If a trial version, some functions may be *disabled* and you may not have the option of using all the functions available on the licensed version--the trial software may or may not alert you to that limitation!  That also might explain the USB issue, as well as the password and path not being asked for!

Let us know if that's the issue!

I looked up a few of those links for write protection but this ONLY happens in GSS. I can go into windows explorer and add\remove all the files I want to the USB drive, but then with GSS all of a sudden its write protected.

I went a few steps into ISO boot package but cancelled it when it started creating the files since I thought prompt for network info would come before.
I think I'm just going to go back to Ghost 8 at work and make network bootable floppy then copy those files over to USB and try that.

It is a trial but as far as I can tell it is a fully functional trial copy for 15 or 30 days.

THIS is why so many people leave Ghost and go over to Script Logic Image Center which I may try to talk my company into doing!!!

Went back to Ghost 8 and made a usb drive bootable and both ghostcasted and dropped image right onto usb drive, although that took a helluva lot longer to put image on usb drive (2 hours) than to ghostcast it (20 minutes)

Thanks!!!    Smiley

I suspect it must have been USB 1.x and not 2.0!  My limited testing of using Ghost 2003 over a home network was very slow--approx. 100 MB/min--comparable to using an optical drive.  USB 2.0 on my system is around 450 MB/min..  Still not the *fastest*, but much better than using a network--so I've not used networking as an option!

Sorry we couldn't resolve the Ghost Boot Wizard issue--still suspect it may be a *trial* version crippled feature problem!

You might be able to resolve the issue here:  Symantec Ghost Solution Suite (GSS) support forum
