Using Ghost 2003 with external SATA drive
Jul 25th, 2009 at 11:49pm

I have the following:

Toshiba laptop with Expresscard slot (XP Pro sp3)
eSATA Expresscard
Seagate 250gb SATA hdd
Ultra SATA external enclosure with eSATA cable
Ghost 2003 latest build .793

I run Ghost from a CD, and it works just great with a USB 2.0 external enclosure and IDE/ATA 250gb hdd.
(CD made using 98se OS) It's just so slow!

When I try using the eSATA setup listed above, the SATA drive does NOT show in the drop-down list for saving the ghost image.

Any help will be greatly appreciated!!

I know... it's been quite awhile since I've been here... these knocks out of left field have got to stop  Roll Eyes

Thanks!

i am guessing it might have something to do with esata. i wonder if they use different drivers than regular sata.

lemme think about it.

Just check that it's not the Ghost 2003 "bug".

Rad and Brian... thanks so much for your replies. I've used my ghost 2003 for years now, and have never had a problem with the "bug"!  the only problem i had was needing a mouse driver cuz i could NEVER get the menu to drop without it.

the LT is model A205-S5825. it came with vista on it which i promptly researched and found the xp drivers and "how to" for it. had to use n-lite to add the sata drivers so the install cd could see the hdd.

the only xp that would work is pro... and i got to delete all the games and ms stuff i didn't want installed! really like that n-lite program. Smiley

been reading some threads here, and "nec-compliant" has me wondering if my esata expresscard and even the expresscard slot is NEC-compliant...  and i don't have a clue on how to find out either.

so any help on that would be much appreciated Smiley

ok, what is AHCI ???

i had to install a driver for the esata expresscard. the Ultra sata enclosure is hot-swapable so i can shut it off without shutting down the LT.

does that mean that i can also remove the esata cable from the expresscard without having to use the tray green arrow thingy? i've been only using the green arrow thingy to remove the expresscard... and don't even know if i need to do that, cuz the little instruction sheet does NOT say that i need to use it to remove it from the expresscard slot.

here are the webpages for the expresscard and the sata hdd enclosure:

You should check for the bug. It has nothing to do with a mouse. It's related to the number of items in the menu and now you have an extra item.

Brian,

i've always been able to move the scroll bar on the right of the drop-down menu...
i've never had to click on one of the items and then use the arrow keys.

is that what you want to know?

Roxe, that's interesting. I just had a look at my Ghost 2003 CD. In the Local Source Drive window my eSATA HD is present. In the drop down menu we have been discussing, I have 8 items and the scroll bar doesn't work. There are 3 more items accessible by using the arrow keys. Looks like you aren't affected by the bug.

Can you see your eSATA HD in the Local Source Drive window?

Edit... I can move the scroll bar up and down but the final 3 items don't appear.

here is what i've done...

when sata drive connected, can see all 4 partitions in explorer and my computer...  can read and write to and from this drive.

in device mgr...
under drives...
ST325082 4AS SCSI Disk Device (disappears when disconnected)

under IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers...
Intel ICH8M-E/M SATA AHCI Controller

under SCSI & RAID controllers...
Silicon Image SiI 3132 SATALink Controller

BIOS is Phoenix ver 2.20
on the main page... there are two hard drives spaces:
Hard disk:  Toshiba ---- (the 120gb)
Hard disk:  None

does not appear to have anything in the BIOS about the expresscard slot. the USB slots are legacy enabled.

the green arrow hdwre remove...

Silicon Image SiI 3132 SATALink Controller
at PCI slot 7

  properties:
date 6-05-07
version 1.0.21.1
dig sign... M$

  driver details:
in c-win-sys32-drivers there are 4 items:
S13132.sys
SiRemFil.sys
SiWinAcc.sys
SilSupp.cpl

  resources:
mem: F4000000 - F400007F
mem: F0000000 - F0003FFF

Now that is a major problem. My eSATA card has its own BIOS (and probably your card too). You can see this BIOS loading before the Ghost CD commences to boot. Do you see your eSATA BIOS at this time?

Boot using any DOS boot disc--your Ghost CD or Win98se oem from About AllBootDisks ISO CD Images
or Boot Disks from BootDisk.com.

If your external HDD connected through the eSATA Expresscard is assigned a DOS drive letter, which I doubt based on what's been said so far, the Ghost 2003 should *see* it too.  But, I think it would depend on whether the laptop's BIOS along with the Expresscard's BIOS has the needed programming to support showing up in DOS--looks doubtful!

If the BIOS is not providing native DOS support, then a DOS driver loaded during boot would be needed--like USB and optical drives need for DOS--but, I have no awareness of DOS drivers for eSATA Expresscards--one could do a Google search:  Dos driver for eSATA Expresscard.

last night was really down about this problem... but right now am excited again to solve, if possible.

switching to the 160gb hdd and going into the bios to boot with ghost cd, there was the IDE/ATA hdd listed!!

the bios has the legacy usb listed and can be enabled/disabled... but nothing i can see to do that with the expresscard.

am gonna research for bios update; and contact toshiba to see  what can be done to get the sata drive with esata card to be seen in the bios.

will report back the results...
