Calcutta 1945: An American Military Photograph Album

Some great
snaps by US GI's
of the Eastern Indian city of Calcutta (now called Kolkota), taken during WW-II.
http://www.library.upenn.edu/collections/sasia/calcutta1947/
The album is on 5 pages, each with about 13 snaps.
Hope you like the photographs.

I like the interface:
http://www.library.upenn.edu/collections/sasia/calcutta1947/album1.html
.. the way you see a thumbnail in a quick-loading page .. with a somewhat larger version displayed upon roll-over (which would suggest these imags load with the page).
Then the full-size images load with a click.
Calcutta. Lots of people. Hindu's, yes?
You are in Mumbai? Which used to be called Bombay? I used to fancy Bombay Sapphire (gin).

Look at all the albums & judge for yourself, an eclectic mix.

Yeah, the Wikipedia entry on Mumbai is pretty comprehensive.

I read somewhere that you (Rad) were in the US Armed Forces before radified.com began. Did you know about US GI's being in Calcutta/Kolkatta or the Far East? I guess the Vietnam conflict would have overshadowed that, for your generation.

I was in the Navy (after high school):

Subs. I likd the technology (reactors) more than the military (rules & regulations).
Unfortunately it's hard to get one Without the other.
Did not know.

Your
blog
makes interesting reading, though some of the technical aspects were beyond my ken (hours and such, read some of the readers' comments too). From a layman's perspective, of the '
submarine films
' I have seen (
K-19: The Widowmaker
,
The Hunt for Red October
,
Ice Station Zebra
), I liked 'Ice Station Zebra'
+
the best - great submarine shots, particularly the aerial ones-though it's the oldest filmed of the lot (
again; strictly from a commoner's perspective
).
'The Widowmaker' is supposed to have been based on a true nuclear-sub mishap in the (then) Russian Navy. Some of the scenes (post-accident) were too gruesome to see-even in the edited TV version. All 3 films made me feel claustrophobic- inside-sub scenes.
+
American Aviation pioneer Howard Hughes is reported to have been obsessed with this movie, having reported to have watched it 150 times.

subs are so big inside, especially the newer ones (tridents) that you never feel/get clautrophobic.
i never heard of anybody ever becoming clautrophobic.
