Laptop restore from DVD
Jan 27th, 2010 at 11:55am

I have an image of my laptop HDD in an OOB state on DVD.  In attempting to restore to a new HDD I booted the laptop with the SystemWorks recovery disk.  After Save & Restore started I replaced the disk in the optical drive with the DVD containing the image.  Upon configuring the restore details and clicking on 'finish' to perform the restore, I got this message:

ERROR EBAB0013:  A test that safeguards the integrity of the program failed unexpectedly.  CHECK failed, PQI:: PartSeekStream: .\PQI.cpp(1706): mReadStream || mWriteStream.

Am I performing the mechanics of this type of restore correctly?

I would try leaving the SystemWorks recovery disc in until the program asks for the DVD with the backup image--you may be changing disc too soon.

Let us know if that helps.

Ok, I did have to swap the disks in order to designate the image file on the DVD as the 'restore point' I wished to use.  I put the SystemWorks recovery disk back in and got the same message.  Hmmmmm....

Could you try to verify your recovery point from the Recovery Environment and also from Windows.

I'm sorry, but I'm not sure what you are asking.

There is a Recovery Point Browser in each environment. You can Verify the recovery point from there. You need to know if it is any good. Optical media is not a good place to store data. The data can become corrupted as the media ages, especially with rewritable media.

Using the installed Save & Restore, yes I was able to view the recovery point on the DVD.  I later performed a restore using the installed S&R to a new hard drive hooked up via USB to the laptop.  But what if I didn't have that other HDD?

Restoring an image to a USB external HD and expecting that HD to boot when it is placed inside the laptop is not foolproof, unfortunately. What brand is your laptop?

The laptop is a Toshiba.  I guess I'm fortunate in that it did work for me Smiley

Toshiba should be OK. IBM, Lenovo, HP and Compaq are the problem ones.

So you have removed your laptop HD,  installed the external HD in your laptop and booted from the new HD?

That is correct.  I was a bit concerned during the restore, as S&R indicated that the restore would be to the "e" drive.  I'm not knowlegeable wrt disk labeling, so thought that might be a problem, but in the end it did in fact work.

Excellent.

Don't be concerned about the drive letters seen, especially in the CD recovery environment. Your restored OS will have the same drive letter as the old OS.

I forgot to answer your question. My suggestion is to create your images to this external HD. It is far more likely that you will be restoring images to your old internal  HD for software corruption reasons than restoring to a new HD for HD failure.
