Sweden - Christer

Have you noticed how Sweden seems to be becoming more & more in international news. I mean, there's the Stieg Larsson novels (.. which have all been made into major mation pictures), and also other headlines, such as:

http://www.time.com/time/world/article/0,8599,2036625,00.html

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-11980221

Then there's Nobel & his prize, which is pissing off China (via Liu Xiaobo):

http://nobelprize.org/nobel_prizes/peace/laureates/2010/xiaobo.html

I like Sweden cuz I heard they are one of the most technologically advanced countries, no?

One of the other readers from Sweden who visits the site said the government (wisely) invested big in technology, and are now reaping the rewards.

Is this more prominent national attention perceptible there in your country? (as it is here)

Watched 'Girl who played with fire' last night. Thot i would prefer the engilsh dubbed version, but actually liked the subtitled version better.

Sweeden has also been in the news recently for Wikileaks.  Last year the buzz in the US about Sweeden was surronding UBS and American tax evaders.

Maybe our neutrality is a contributing factor. During the second wold war, SAAB started developing military aircraft and that continued post war. Currently, SAAB and bristish BAE are jointly marketing the JAS 39 Gripen in competition with U.S. and french designs. In the mid fifties, the Swedish Airforce was ranked as the fourth strongest in the world. The army and navy too were developed and the spin off effects on civilian industry were not negligible.

Well, that's a difficult question but I think it varies over time. Most people live their lives as best they can and don't bother but like now, when we learn that other countries take an interest, our interest is awakened. Currently there are many news reports of "news reports" originating abroad.

Dubbing is very rare in Sweden. We always have subtitles and some say that this is the reason for swedes being rather good at foreign languages. From an early age we hear a foreign language (mostly english) and read swedish at the same time. This increases the vocabulary and many swedes speak english without a marked accent.

Old chinese proverb:
If I hear - I forget, If I see - I remember, If I do - I understand
