i talked to the girl from wiredtree yesterday, in chcago. she said she moved there 5 years ago and this was by far the worst winter she's seen. one bad storm after another.
this says most snow in 40 years.

All OK with us. When we flew over southern Queensland about three weeks ago we saw the flood waters. Frightening. Roofs protruding from muddy water. Highways disappearing into muddy water. Brisbane airport is near the coast and is elevated so no problems.
We live two hours south of Brisbane and our area wasn't affected by the flood at all. This time.
The cyclone. Worst on record. Fortunately it didn't pass directly over Cairns (initial forecast track) but smaller towns to the south really suffered. It crossed halfway between Cairns and Townsville and the damage to Townsville was much worse than Cairns. I assume this was because Townsville was in the "dangerous semicircle".

In 2008
my daughter attended James Cook University in Townsville for a semester. She's kept in close contact with her old JCU roommates and friends, and they were prepared for the worst. Her roommates, with whom she had shared a house about 8km inland, chose to hunker down and stay, while other friends who lived right on the beach ("
The Strand
") had the good sense to evacuate to higher ground.
I watched the doppler loop as the cyclone roared over the coast on Wed. Townsville and other areas south of the eye (the "dangerous semicircle") were painted yellow and red on doppler for several hours, while Cairns (north of the eye) barely got beyond dark green. Make no mistake, 290-knot winds (
yikes!!
) are no picnic for anyone in Yasi's path, but those on the south side of the eye got the worst of it.
