Symamtec Ghost Server and Norton Ghost boot disk compatibility
Jun 17th, 2011 at 5:53pm

Hi

I'm using Symamtec Ghost Server 8.2.0 to create/restore an image of my computer using boot floppy over the home network.

Now I'd like to buy Norton Ghost 15.0.

Is it possible to restore an image created with Norton Ghost 15.0 using the same boot floppy from Ghost Server 8.2.0?

Sorry, no. They use different file formats. You currently create .gho files. Ghost 15 creates .v2i files. Ghost 15 can't run from a floppy, only CD or USB flash drive. Ghost 15 can create/restore images over a network.

at my knowlege its ghost 2003.793, but why u refuse to use a CD with a Boot Sector. or a stick with an Bootsector...  Undecided

have look at my post in the symantec Forum:

http://community.norton.com/t5/Other-Norton-Products/I-need-HELP-on-Norton-Ghost...

and the best is that u can backup with this Version partions above 1 Terabyte

The problem is my computer is quite old, no CD-ROM and it doesn't boot from USB stick.
There are 3 OS setuped: windows, linux and freeBSD.
Symamtec Ghost Server 8.2.0 works good for windows, but it needs a very long time for linux or freeBSD.

Ghost 15 requires a CD or USB flash drive for restores. So that's out.

Have you tried TeraByte's Image for DOS? There is a 30 day trial and it can run from a floppy. It will image/restore Windows and Linux OS. I'd be interested to hear if it is faster than Ghost for your Linux OS.

If you want to backup/restore over the network that is possible by booting from a NetBootDisk floppy and using Image for DOS for the imaging. But I suggest a local backup before you try networking.
