Time To Create A Recovery Point
Oct 30th, 2012 at 8:02pm

Question:  How long should it take Ghost 10 to create a 30GB recovery point?

OS is XP Pro.  PC has 4GB or RAM.  Internal Drive is 250GB with about 30GB used.  Installed Ghost about 10 days ago.  Created several recovery points that took about 15 hours.  Incrementals took about 20 minutes.  Decided to clean things up a bit so I deleted all recovery points and started over.

First attempt was with a 1TB network drive on a gigE LAN.  Started creating a recovery point about 5 PM.  At midnight, progress was 5%.  (Performance slider is all the way to Fast.)  At 7 AM, progress was still 5%.  There was no network activity on the Task Manager strip chart nor was there any packet traffic in the Network Status screen.  Disk activity indicator on the PC showed HD was idle.  Cancelled the recovery point creation.  By noon, nothing was happening so I rebooted.

Second attempt was with an external USB drive (145GB free, USB 2 cable connected directly to PC).  Same result as on first attempt, i.e. after 12 hours Ghost 10 is still at 5%.  Again, no HD activity on PC.

I plan to reinstall Ghost 10 and try some more.

I expect about 20 minutes. Let us know if the reinstall helps.

To modify the DEP policy in Windows
   1. On the Windows taskbar, click Start > Control Panel.
   2. Double-click System.
   3. On the Advanced tab, under Performance, click Settings.
   4. On the Data Execution Prevention tab, check Turn on DEP for all programs and services except those I select.
   5. Click OK to save the change.

As soon as I turned on DEP for all programs .... , restarted,  and clicked on Back Up Now, there is a high level of CPU activity and near continuous drive activity on my external USB HD.  Ghost says it will take about an hour to create the recovery point but that is not too inconvenient.  Am anxiously awaiting completion so that I can see if a restore point is created.

I see I've got a lot of reading of past board messages ahead of me.
