Probably need a little more detail as to how you have your HDDs set up (what type of HDD, what type and how many HDD controllers, and how the HDDs are connected--i.e. to which controllers) on the system, and which HDD is the source and which HDD is the destination, and from which HDD is Windows (and therefore *ghost32.exe*) running from.

Need to clarify!  *ghost32.exe* is a version of Ghost that is ported to run under Windows--can't run as a stand alone program, and I doubt it can be *booted from.....floppy disks*--so need more info on exactly what you're doing, program(s) you're using, and type of boot disks you have, etc.....

Were you running ghost32.exe from Win7 when you saw that error ? While the OS was booted? That is the error (1959) I see if I run ghost32.exe in Windows.

Do you have a WinPE disk or a Win7 32-bit DVD?

Which ghost file is on your floppy set? File size? Filename?

I'm sure he's using the DOS version of Ghost--ghost.exe--that came with his version of Ghost Solution Suite.

You can get the version and build for the DOS Ghost program by putting the floppy with the *ghost.exe* on it in the floppy drive, open a Window's command prompt, and switch to the A:\ drive.

Type *ghost.exe -ver* without the asterisks at the prompt and you will get the version and build number.

Does the Ghost Solution Suite *Boot Disk Wizard* offer the option to make a bootable optical disc that puts the *ghost32.exe* program on it instead of the *ghost.exe* program on it--in other words the boot optical disc boots to a version of WinPE that Ghost Solution Suite can then use the *ghost32.exe* version of Ghost?

I've tried that myself, running Ghost32.exe from within windows.
Got the same result as WP and decided to NOT try it again.

Running Ghost from a Boot CD in DOS, bypasses all that "file lock" gobbledegook.
In fact, using a boot CD allows you to back up a drive that cannot even boot up a system.
Like, a drive experiencing boot failure or a data drive with NO OS on it at all.

Sometimes, I'll back up a failing hard drive, just to preserve the data files on it, even when that drive cannot boot the system itself.  The data files can later be recovered using "Ghost Explorer".

Just a though,

Have you considered googleing the error?  Wink

http://lmgtfy.com/?q=ghost32.exe+cannot+lock+the+volume+(1959)&l=1

The litteral is that there are files in use because you are still in windows and windows has locked the files from being used.
Look to see if your Volume shadow copy service is disabled.  Volume Shadow Copies used for backup and other purposes. If this service is stopped, shadow copies will be unavailable for backup and the backup may fail. If this service is disabled, any services that explicitly depend on it will fail to start.

There is a command line that can be tried when you run ghost32.exe that may be able to get you past the issues that are being seen with the files that are locked.

1.Go to Start> Run.
2.Type in cmd
3.Click OK.
4.Navigate to C:\Program Files\Symantec\Ghost.  (or C:\Program Files (x86)\Symantec\Ghost)
5.Type ghost32.exe -forcevolumesnapshot
6.Click Enter.
7.Configure Ghost to meet your needs

The prefered meathod would be to create a Windows PE boot CD or One Click Virtual partition using the ghost boot wizard and then boot this system from the windows pe boot disk.  When you system is not hot (booted to the active os) then as OldCasper noted you will avoid the entire situation of having files locked.

Cheers
Spuds.

I've been running Ghost, from a DOS boot disk since 1997.
It just seems like the logical way to back up any hard drive.
Take the OS out of the equation, so it can't muck up the works.

From a DOS boot disk, Ghost 11.5 (for instance) will back up almost anything, from '98 to W8.
My software guru even backs up his Unix server with it.
It doesn't seem to really care what the OS is, as long as it can see those little ones and zeros. Smiley
In fact it will back up a data disk, with NO OS on it at all.  That can come in awfull handy at times.  I've even used it to Clone my backup data disk.

Once you (anyone) get on to the idea of doing all your Backups from a DOS boot disk, you'll never try backing up anything from within Windows again.
I've been doing it like that for 16 years now.  Fantastic!

Cheers Mates!
