Page 2/6 CONTINUING REGISTRATION IN 581B & 58IC: The 581 Director must register for 581B & 581C unless the 581 is completed by the last day of classes for the semester. (see definition of "completion" on last page). All enrolled 581 crew members (e.g., Cinematographer) must also register for 581B & 581C unless their work on the project is complete and the 581 Mentor has given them a final grade. All 581 students who fail to register for 581B or 581C on time will be required to pay the customary late registion penalty. WARN YOUR CREW MEMBERS ABOUT THIS! TIME ALLOWED FOR COMPLETION OF 581: THE "3 SEMESTERS" RULE: The 581 must have a realistic budget & feasible schedule. The 581 creator(s) may attempt to complete the 581 within one or two semesters (581A or B). However, most 581's require a third semester to complete post-production. However, approval to go on to the second and third consecutive semester is not automatic; it is granted jointly by the Mentor and the Head of Production and is dependent on the 581 making Satisfactory Progress. SATISFACTORY PROGRESS: Satisfactory Progress for 581 A, B, & C is defined as follows FIRST SEMESTER (581A): 1. Principal Photography complete 2. Sound transferred 3. Dailies synced and screened during production (optional) 4. Dailies telecined SECOND SEMESTER (581B): 1. Dailies digitized and logged 2. First Cut/Editor's Cut 3. Second Cut 4. Work print conformed and screened (before shooting pick-up's) 5. Pick-ups Shot 6. Fine Cut 7. Avid Picture Lock 8. Work print conformed to Avid Picture Lock THIRD SEMESTER (581C): 1. New telecine for sound 2. Spotting session for music and sound 3. Music composed 4. Sound editing completed 5. Opticals ordered 6. Titles shot and cut in 7. Sound mixed 8. Negative Cut 9. Lab work complete, final telecine 10. Production Documentation Book completed and turned in to Mentor. 11. Fees, damages or charges not paid from the budget are paid and/or cleared 12. Project Screened EXTENSIONS: Only students who have locked picture at an approved length will be eligible for extension of facilities beyond three semesters. This is the outside limit of what is considered "sufficient progress." If the Mentor supports the students request for an extension, then the student must present a petition for extension plus a VHS dub of the locked project to the 581 Comniittee who will issue a final decision. If the project is extended, students must register for 581Z for 0 units. Regular registration deadlines airply including fees for late registration.
