1/20
End of the Second Week
Week
two ended today with a terrible day of traffic - both ways - heavy, creeping,
bumper-to-bumper traffic. Sobering SoCal reality. She was 5 minutes late to class.
She hates
being late. She typically plans to leave early have a 30-minute 'decompression'
period after
the drive.
The drive is one of the hardest parts for her. We might look into moving up to LA at the end of the semester. It's a 3-yr prgm. That's a long time to contend with LA traffic. As an undergrad, she was able to schedule classes around traffic. Not so with grad school, where all classes are scheduled for her. All her classes coincide with rush hour traffic. Wendy the nature nymph doesn't deal well with LA traffic, especially at rush-hour. There's also the increased chance of an accident from driving when tired. That's what concerns me most. Maybe during spring break, we'll check out some residential areas up there. Heard that Los Felix & Silver Lake were good areas, where many of her classmates have settled.
After
every week of showing films, they profs suggested the students throw a party - to schmooze
& talk
about their films, cuz that's the way it's done in the real world (Hollywood). I
found it interesting that USC not only acknowledges it's-who-you-know-that-counts, but actually
prepares their students for that. Maybe I'm reading more into it than is there,
but it strikes me as odd for some reason.
