Title: W2K won't install to SCSI boot drive
Post by bigdog3 on Jun 27th, 2002 at 9:23am
Hi everybody! I have a Tekram DC390U3W
SCSI adapter, Seagate Cheetah SCSI drive, XP2100, Gigabyte GA-7VRXP. I have absolutely beat my head trying to install Win
2K.
I have tried:

Not loading SCSI drivers: Install fails

Loading SCSI drivers (F6): Locks up at "creating WINNT folder"

Installing to an IDE drive, then use GHOST to copy image to SCSI drive:
WIN2K begins to load, then get unknown hard error.

BTW, Win ME installs, boots, and runs fine on the SCSI drive, so I would think termination, etc. is correct. I am not a SCSI guru though.

If anybody has any ideas, would appreciate much. Thanks.

never heard of this problem. i have the same controller.

if winme installs, i would also say that term/hardware is fine.

i assume u corectly made the boot disc from the supplied cdrom?

if i recall correctly, there were a couple of options available, which gives room for error.

ur using a floppy with drivers, correct?

i would try remaking the driver floppy. floppies are not the most reliable storage mediums.

if u still can't get it to work, i can zip & post the contents of my driver floppy. that way we can eliminate that potential problem.

i would also reformat the partition, just in case.

how is the drive partitioned?

which cheetah do u have? there are many.

u definately have to press the F6 button when prompted .. or, at least, i did.

u may also need to flash ur bios, cuz there is problem eith cheetahs .. she the tekram site for the latest bios. i flashed no problem, even tho i didn't have a problem with my cheetah (x15-36lp).

okay, i zipped & uploaded my tekram dc-390u3w boot diskette files. see here:

http://radified.com/Files/

they're listed last under 'scsi boot floppy', right column (753kb).

u can get the latest u3w bios here:

http://www.tekram.com/updates.asp?Product=DC-390U3_Series

look for v4.19, dated 3/8/03

This is my first SCSI "experience". Whew, and what an experience! lol!

It's FINALLY working. I greatly appreciate your response. I had pretty much done everything there though and it still wasn't working.

Problem turned out to be the drive cable was on wrong connector/channel on adapter card. That is the only thing I changed when it started working. I have a Tekram DC390U3W.

Put that in your data bank so you can help the next hapless soul who runs into that problem!

Thanks.

I don't see how it could work fine if the hardware wsn't configured correctly. If the car has no engine, it shouldn't be able to run. No?

Well, it DID work fine with Win ME. With W2K, it would see the drive and format, and then start installing and lockup every time. I dunno. Cable position is the only thing I changed!
