The only versions of Ghost which are certified for Vista support are Ghost 12 and Norton Save and Restore 2.0.

Yes.  I recently got a Dell desktop with Vista, and am using Ghost 12 on it.

Ghost 12 and Norton Save & Restore 2.0 are very similar in features; both take image backups (hot).  There are a few more advanced features in Ghost 12 that in my opinion 90% of people will never use, so take your pick.

Hello Ghost4me,

I installed Ghost ver 12 on my notebook.

I have a question what would be the approx size of the first recovery point & image of an OS etc occupying 26 GB on the hard drive.

How many optical media /DVDs will it utilize?

Hoping to hear from you,

Regards,

Probably around 13 GB.  You're probably going to be happier storing your backup image files on an external usb2 hard drive, which are pretty cheap now.

I have no personal experience as yet, but DOS Ghost (Ghost 2003 or Ghost 8.x, etc.) apparently can be used with Vista by making some adjustments to how you create your images (using certain *switches*), and you can modify the Vista boot manager to act more like that of the previous WinXP, and then it is compatible with DOS Ghost:

Ghost 2003/Ghost 8.2 and Windows Vista

Vista and Symantec Ghost 8.x

With DOS based Ghost, you will have to save the image to an external HDD or optical disc--can't save it to the same partition as the source!

Ghost 12 can save an image to the same partition as you are backing up--I'd recommend saving your image to the HDD--tell Ghost 12 to save the image in DVD size chunks, and then later burn the image to DVD's--saving directly to optical media will probably be agonizingly slow!!!  With optical media--it's always a good idea to check image integrity of the optical media image after it's been burned to the disc!

Usually, Ghost will calculate the *estimated* number of optical discs before you continue--but with compression I suspect it would be around 3 DVD's for 26 GB of data.
