Ghost 9 Update download
Jul 22nd, 2007 at 7:36am

Hi all,

I have also given up on Symantec support a long time ago.

I was hoping there's someone on this forum that can tell me where I can download the ver 9.0.2.3981 update for Ghost 9.

With the standard ver 9.0 on my CD, I can't clone SATA drives. I did however manage to do it in the past, thats when I realised that at the time the update was available via life-update.

I bought ver 10, problem is I have to activate it everytime I need to do a clone.
(I run a small private pc repair service & need to clone clients drives for upgrades etc )

Any help or advice would be highly appreciated

Regards

The update to Ghost 9 used to be availabe by running live-update.  Maybe it's no longer available since I suspect Ghost 9 is no longer supported, and has been replaced by Ghost 10, Norton Save & Restore, and Ghost 12 releases.

That's because you have to have a separate license for each pc you USE Ghost 10 on.  You should contact Symantec for information on getting a technician's license.  The reason for activation is the prevent exactly what you are attempting to do--use it on more than one pc but only paying for one copy.

Actually, that's a good question--a similar issue occurred some time ago when Symantec discontinued support for its Ghost 2003 product--even though they were still shipping copies of Ghost 2003's installation CD with their Ghost 10 product for those users who were still using legacy Windows OS versions that did not support *.net* software, i.e. non-WinXP OS versions!

For a period, users who had legitimate user licenses of Ghost 2003, but older installation CD's, found if they had to re-install their older version of Ghost for whatever reason, they could not use LiveUpdate any longer to update to the last build of the product.

Symantec must have received a lot of negative feedback on that, because they issued a new version of LiveUpdate that allowed for accessing older *legacy* versions of Ghost so they could be LiveUpdated to the last, most recent build of the Ghost Product--but, interestingly, Symantec's LiveUpdate that got installed by the older Ghost installation CD was not able to LiveUpdate itself with the newer LiveUpdate that allows access to the server with the latest builds of the old Ghost programs!

Here's a thread that discusses that here:    Norton Ghost 2003 Update

Here's the Symantec FAQ that addresses *manually* updating LiveUpdate to the more recent version that can access the *legacy* Ghost versions:  How to obtain the programs updates that are archived on Symantec LiveUpdate server

Unfortunately, the FAQ does not identify which products are considered *archived* legacy versions--:

so here's the question--does that more recent version of LiveUpdate allow for updating to the most recent build of Ghost 9 and/or 10 Ghost products--have they become *archived* versions now?

Well, I'm not sure what the exact problem is that you are having and how LiveUpdate will solve this!

Ghost 9 does not install SATA drivers for use in Windows--you have to have the Windows drivers for your SATA installed via WinXP's OS!  Ghost 9 uses the SATA drivers of the OS when running Ghost 9 in Windows!

Now, SATA support might be missing from the Ghost 9 installation CD--in which case, during the first few seconds of the boot process when using the Ghost 9 CD to boot to the *Recovery Environment*, you have to press *F6* when that message occurs down at the bottom of the screen asking if you need to load HDD controller drivers that are not included on the Recovery Disk.

But, LiveUpdate will not update your installation CD with newer SATA drivers--the bootable installation CD is not re-writeable--i.e. it's a read only disc!

So, given the above--how did you manage to do that in the past????!!!

As Ghost4me stated, for all versions of Ghost, you need a separate licenced copy of Ghost for each machine that Ghost is run on--whether installed on the machine or not--to be legal!

Symantec should have a program of licensing precisely to address technicians who clone computers. Probably, he may need to look at GSS2.0 as well. The licensing cost can be passed on to the customer whose computer is cloned.

I agree--and they do--Ghost 9 is a *retail* product, and was never meant to be for a repair/technician type setup!

That product has the option of a *site* licensing program--it would probably be the proper solution for the needs of a repair shop--and the cloning/deployment ability of that product would probably be vastly superior to any of the *retail* versions of Ghost.
