Multi boot between ghost & windows 2003
Aug 5th, 2007 at 11:23am

Hi all,

I would like to have ur intentions for following scenario.

I have Del machine having windows 2003 standard edition and image of that partition containing win2003 operating system.i want to add ghost in my windows boot menu so every time when the system starts, in the boot menu it will show me as below:

Windows 2003
Ghost.

so that if i choose windows 2003 it take me to normal operating system. But if i choose ghost, the ghost software appear and restore my win2003 image file. so tht next time when i boot to windows 2003 operating system i find fresh copy of my operating system.

does any one know how to do this? i hv seen tht approach at one place. its really good technique tht can be used for test environments.

Regards,

Ali

I moved your topic to this forum because Ghost 9, 10, Save & Restore, and Ghost 12 do not have the ability to do what you want--only DOS based Ghost that will accept command line instructions can do what you want.

If you want to use the Microsoft way of multi-booting, you need to first install a DOS boot partition where you will place the Ghost program and it's *config.sys* and *autoexec.bat* boot files.  Then, you would install you Windows 2003 OS.  The installation program would then set up the Microsoft multi-boot with the menu selectable items.

If you already have Windows 2003 installed, then adding a bootable DOS partition is difficult using the Microsoft multi-boot way--I've seen discussions how to do it--but, it's complicated.

It would be better to use a third party multi-boot manager such as the free XOSL - Boot Manager by Geurt Vos

More detailed information about multi-booting can be found here:  Understanding MultiBooting and Booting Windows from an Extended Partition

And installing the boot manager here:  Installing the Boot Manager

you can add to XP /2003 menu in Boot.ini along these lines :
=============================
I downloaded Grub4DOS from
http://linux.softpedia.com/get/System/Boot/GRUB-for-DOS-3507.shtml
then unziped it
it had fat12grldr.img so using winimage i made a bootable floppy.
and booted from that ok.
then  I copied the GRldr and MENU.lst from th floppy to the root of my
IDE HDD C: drive
and then opened the Boot.ini which lives in the root of C:
and added (appended)this line to it
C:\GRLDR="start GRUB"
then saved it.
and rebooted it .
it went straight to XP menu and had the line "start Grub" on the menu
so using the down arrow key I navigated quickly to it and pressed enter on key board .
the GRUB4DOS menu came up.
Cool REAL cool!!!

quickly pressed ESC escape key to stop GRUB count down.
then went to command line and pressed enter.
at grub prompt I typed
root (
and then pressed TAB key
it indicated the floppy(fd0) the HDD(hd0) and rd (assumed it as ram disk
=======================================
