Ghost 2003 Error 29089

Greetings Board People. I come in peace. Please help.

I'm attempting to burn out an image to a maxtor external drive via usb2.0 using ghost2003. I successfully created 2 images, but alas my drive burning mojo is dead.

I continue to receive "Application Error 29089" Write to image file failed.

I'm using windows xp booting to dos. I formatted my external drive with macbook's disk utility. The file system on the external drive is Fat32. What else?? Booting with a bootable cd with usb drivers loaded. I can see the external drive in dos. I run ghost, intiate the burn process, the error then appears halting the application.

I'm tired of banging my head on this issue. Any suggestions?

So, what's different from when you *successfully created 2 images*, and now *continue to receive "Application Error 29089"*?

Lets see, the first 2 images are from dell latitude d610/d620
The failures occur with dell latitude d810/d820

The utility is for mac. Should I reformat the drive using a windows app? I'd try anything at this point. I am creating images for a fewwindows based laptops

That does represent a major difference! Wink

USB and DOS compatibility between on-system controllers and the external HDD units if full of potential issues--have you tried the native Ghost 2003 USB DOS drivers?

Here's an alternative USB DOS driver that has shown the most compatibility:

I'm back folks,

Ok,
I've created a new bootdisk using the NightOwl instructions.
I Booted to dos,
ran ghost
and received the identical error: Abort 29089

Without a plan I decided I had nothing to lose startin clean.
I zeroed out the drive. -Wipe Drive Pro -
This morning I downloaded a utility and reformatted the drive fat32.
Booted to dos, ran ghost and burned out 2 images to my drive,
but
when I got to image #3 the error msg returned.

Thinking there's possibly an error in the drive that I'm imaging, i tried to burn an image from another computer: same result.

I think the issue wasn't my usb drivers or my bootdisk....maybe it was my external drive all along. A maxtor usb one touch.

The 29089 ghost error is so generic "Write to image file failed"..It doesn't give me much to go on.

My only hesistation is when I run chkdsk the drive comes back clean.

I'd like to verify it's a hardware issue before contacting the vendor.
Any thoughts?

Does my logic make sense?

Any suggestions?

Well, consider taking another tack which would give you the same end result. Should you be able to get your hands on either Norton Ghost 10.0, Norton Save & Restore, or the Symantec Recovery Disk included with Norton SystemWorks 2006 Premier, you can boot up with the factory CD to immediately engage the legacy Backup/Restore "cold-imaging" procedures by following the path 'Recover > Recover Data on My Computer > Recover using a legacy Ghost image'
. Following this procedure will yield the side benefit of bypassing both USB mass-storage device and - most, if not all of - those maddening SATA HDD glitches frequently encountered with DOS-dependent Norton Ghost 2003. This procedure is independent of those boot capabilities of any other removable media or any HDD.

alternate

name for ghost32.exe) which will allow you to both create Ghost Backup images or conversely Recover such images that are in fact totally compatible and interchangeable with those *.gho/*.ghs files created with the

of Norton Ghost 2003 - but not with those files created with Norton Ghost 9, Norton Ghost 10.0, or Norton Save & Restore during "hot-imaging".

So, it works sometimes--but errors on two different computers when using your USB HDD in DOS for storing Ghost images.

If it checks out okay when booted to Windows, then the external HDD is probably okay! Using USB in DOS has shown itself to be *cranky*--some units seem to work, but others have problems and issues--just not compatible with DOS drivers!

Using a USB external HDD in DOS is not a supported use of USB--USB was designed to be a Windows *standard* and not a DOS standard--so I doubt you will get too far complaining to the vendor!

I would try a different USB external HDD from a different vendor to see if it works okay--I have successfully used an Iomega 40 GB USB unit (I took that case apart, found a Seagate IDE HDD installed, and have substituted a 80 GB and a 120 GB HDD in that unit and they have worked just fine also--would not work with a 160 GB unit however!), an Adaptec enclosure kit for USB, and a Seagate 160 GB USB unit successfully!
