Ghost 2003 "GhostStartError"
Dec 30th, 2007 at 11:21pm

I have made ghost images for 4 of my machines using Basic Backup and a mapped drive on a peer machine. I can use peer to peer boot disks for each to access their respective images.

The 5th machine the same will not work. Can not create the image across network to mapped drive.

Machine appears to be running normally. Old computer, Cyrix board and CPU at 266 Mhz. 256MB SDRAM. It is running Win'98SE. NIC is old D-Link 220ECT 10mbps but has RJ-45 connection it pre Win'98 and a real bastard to set up as I remember. Dont know why I dont kill off this dinosaur.

The drive is mapped to E:\, can create new folder on network drive from the machine so no trouble with connection or permission. When I press Run Now in Ghost, not even out of Windows, I  get

Norton Ghost Error: General Exception

A General Exception occurred

"GhostStartError" error file has been generated with the details

The file is created and appears in the mapped drive on the other computer. Below are the details. I tell you it means nothing to me and gives no hint to how to fix. My searches have yielded nothing.

It has became that time of month where I make backup images of all my machines and I have not found an answer to why I can not do the old dinosaur (original post). Prior to last month I imaged this machine same as the rest.

Only thing done was uninstall/reinstall Ghost and same result.

Somebody help!

From the error report I dont even know if it is software or hardware.

The thing that threw me about this is Ghost spat the dummy before it even exited from Windows.

It was never a priority so I did not think about it for roughly a month. I just thought what might be different. The NIC was the answer. I interchange PC components regularly to suit my purposes. So I put in a 3 Com NIC one that I knew Ghost had the driver. No worries ghosted sending image to the mapped drive as wanted. Smiley

When failed the D-Link DE220E ISA Ethernet Adapter had the DOS packet driver nominated by me off it's original floppy. Inbetween my last install and the prior one the floppy must have deteriated and the file became corrupt. I deduce this because I downloaded a new copy and added it to the ghost list of drivers. Then I used it and what do you know it worked. Smiley

GhostStartError file gave me nothing and obviously anyone who has been to this thread before either. (Retorical) Why could it not say, Hey your DOS driver is crap!!! Replace driver. Grin

Even more infuriating is when Ghost points its error state to the *wrong* problem!  I think Ghost has very limited diagnostic *smarts*!

Thanks for reporting back with your efforts and the results!
