Not able to select a harddisk (partition )
Jan 19th, 2008 at 2:17pm

Hi,

I'm Ron and new here.
I have the following problem.
I have used Ghost 7.0 quite often on a 1.44 MB floppy and it worked perfect.
Since I have a new computer with no floppy drive I have to boot from CD
So I had to made a bootable CD
The topic "Guide to creating bootable CD/DVD's without A:\ floppy drive" from NightOwl was easy to understand and very helpful.
Thank you NightOwl!

But there is a small problem which I'm not able to solve:
The CD is booting fine and Ghost is starting normal.
But when I want to select a drive (my *.img is located on a harddsik partition) I only see the   a: Local drive,  b: Local drive and x: [GHOST_BO.OT_] CD Rom drive
I'm not able to select any harddrive.

I followed exact the steps that NightOwl in his topic described.
The Ghost.exe file is a copy of the Ghost.exe file (Ghost 7.0) on the 1.44 Floppy

Please NightOwl or some one else can you help me?

Thanks in advance.

Ron

one of your hard disks or partitions got to be FAT32
that is where .gho image lives
or be on  root of Cd where you are booting from .
==================
If you need to partition your hard disk here is a FREE Linux Partition magic Boot CD
you can use it for windows NTFS too

http://partedmagic.com/

here is a free tool to Burn ISO images (needed for above) to CD-R

Tell us more about that *new computer*!  Per chance are you using SATA HDDs and SATA controllers?!

Hello Ben and NightOwl,

Thanks for replying,

In the meantime I'v been succesful in this particular case.  That is, I created a bootable CD by following the steps of "Guide to creating bootable CD/DVD's without A:\ floppy drive" by NighOwl and attached the image.gho on the same DVD.
This works fine. Thanks again NightOwl.

But still I like to have a bootbale CD starting up GHOST but without any Ghost-image on it.
In Ghost (when Ghost has starting up) I want to select the image.gho file on the second partion and dump it to the first partition (C:\)
In this way I used Ghost 7.0 on a 1.44 floppy succesful for years.

My "new computer" has indeed SATA HDD's and controllers, but other some computers, which have IDE controllers, has the same problem when I tested the bootable CD: That is, I don't see any harddisk(s).

Do you need more information?

Greetings from Holland,

Ron

Are you still working on this--the recent board upgrade has been distracting my spare time!

What is the file system on that second partition--NTFS?

I think Ghost 7 is able to *see* NTFS partitions in its DOS interface, but it can not *see* Ghost files if the image is stored on a NTFS partition!  Ghost 7 has to save an image of a NTFS to a FAT32 or FAT16 partition--and can not save to the NTFS!  And if the image is on a FAT partition, then Ghost can restore it to where ever.

Ghost 7.5 added the ability to save or restore from a NTFS partition.

Does this explain the problem you are having?

Thanks NightOwl,

Sorrie for the delay in my reply.
I guess you're right and I'll have to get the 7.5 version of Ghost or higher.
For the moment I solved the problem by putting the ghost file on the DVD.
Thanks for helping and advising.

Another option--does your second partition where you want to save the Ghost image file need to be a NTFS partition--could it be FAT32?  You would then have access for saving the image to that partition and restoring from it!

Just a thought!
