Recovery Environment hangs
Mar 26

Hi
I replaced the harddrive on my laptop and am trying to do a Ghost restore. Ia am Using Ghost 12. The CD starts as normal downloading Windows files and then hangs on the screen that has Mcrosoft in the middle and a bar that goes back and forth.
Please can someone help me figure out how to restore my image. I used the Toshiba Recovery disk and I do have an OS but I would hate to have to put all my programs back on.
Thanks!

vivienne,
Has the Ghost 12 CD booted in that laptop before? Does the CD boot in other computers?
Is the old HD still operational? With Ghost 12 installed? How many partitions are present? Do you have a USB external enclosure that holds laptop HDs?

The Ghost 12 cd has booted in that laptop but not since I put in the new drive.
The laptop has three partitions.
The CD boots in other computers.
The old HD is still operational and I have ordered an enclosure for laptop HDs which I should hopeflly receive tomorrow.
I have Shadow Protect and the same problem is there so it must be that I did something wrong when I set up the disk.
Thanks very much for helping me, Brian.

Vivienne,
If the Ghost and the Shadow Protect CDs don't boot it does suggest a hardware issue. Can you see the HD in the BIOS? Were there jumpers on the new HD? SATA or IDE HD?

I can see the hdd in the bios.
I don't know if there were jumpers - this is the first time I have done this. I just took out the old hdd and put one in.
It is an IDE HD.
I do have XP on it - from the Toshiba Recovery disk. Does that mean it is set up correctly ?
It can also read other cds as I used Partiton Magic to initially partition and format the hdd.
Thanks!

I'd forgotten. Yes, it must be OK.
I recall one of our members had a similar problem. I'll see if I can find the thread but I don't think we found an answer.
How large are the HDs? You could clone the old to the new with CopyWipe when the USB enclosure arrives. More later.

Ugh!

The old one was 40 GB. The new one is 160 GB - divided 40 GB, 40 GB and the balance as a third partition.
If we can't find an answer, does that mean I cannot continue to use backup software ???? That would be awful! Anyway, I'll wait to hear more from you.
Thanks so much for helping me.

Download this...... CopyWipe for DOS. Not the other two.
http://www.terabyteunlimited.com/copywipe.php
Unzip, double click makedisk.exe, don't tick Change Wiping Defaults, create an ISO. Burn the ISO with ImgBurn or your favourite app. Boot to the CD to make sure it works. Read the copywipe.pdf. Let us know when the USB enclosure arrives.
The plan is to clone (copy) your old HD to the new HD. The new HD will stay in the laptop and the old HD will be in the enclosure.
Is the old HD partitioned?

The old hdd has two partitions - one for the programs and one for the data.
I shall do as you say about the copywipe but am not sure if that is going to solve my problem. I do not want it to be like my old hdd. I would like to restore it to a different image. Is this going to allow me to do this or am I still going to have the same problem of the recovery environment not working ?
Thanks.

Could you remove the new HD and check if jumpers are present?

Okay - will do but first what am I looking for ? If the harddrive is working, does it not mean it is okay ? Should jumpers still be changed ?
Is this something that I will know how to figure out doing ?
Ugh! Now I'm scared.

Vivienne,
Some laptop HDs have jumpers and others don't. I'm clutching at straws because your previous HD was happy with the Ghost CD and this HD isn't. See if there is a Master setting or a Master without Slave setting.
What are the full details of the new HD?

Brian:
I looked in the instruction booklet that came with it and it shows jumpers settings: Master, Slave and Cable Select.
In the Bios it shows as Primary IDE and the cd rom as secondary Ide.
Do I still have to remove the drive and check the jumpers ?
Thanks

Yes. It should work with Master or Cable Select but perhaps one of these setting won't work with Ghost. It's worth trying the other setting.

I see what you mean! Ok, I'll try that and see what happens. I'll let you know.
Thanks.
