Guests & Members Online Today
Mar 27th, 2008 at 10:54pm

I installed this mod today:

"Guests & Members Online Today"

http://www.boardmod.org/yabb/YaBB.pl?board=newsy22;action=display;num=1204666245

Fun stuff. Not necessary, tho.

You can see what it does on the main forum index page, listed under "Forum Statistics." It resets back to zero at midnight every day (Chicago time, which = Eastern minus 1 hour).

Mod does not appear to be working 100% .. as I see some members online .. in the regular "Users online" block, tho these users do not appear in the "Guests & Members Online Today" section.

Cannot be, logically. One user showed up later, while others never did.

Notta show stopper, since we don't need to mod anyway. But I like things to work as they should.

I had no problems (errors) with the installation. So why some members do not show up in/on the list is a mystery to me.

For example, here's a screenshot I just took. Notice how rleescott is currently online, but does not appear in the list above (Same goes for others I've seen online throughout the day):

There are still a few more hours remaining in the day, but I noticed we already broke the
500
-guests mark. This particular mod does not record the max-ever users/members/guests .. like the standard/regular "Current Users Online" reporting statistics does. It's interesting to see how many visitors we have. Lots of good, informative posts here to search thru.

Yikes!  Been gone for a few days--and everything has changed!!!

There's always a reply box at the end now--you don't have to click *reply*?!

Look at all those member categories and colors!

What else is *new*?!

uh, *Karma*--what's that?!

Where ya been? I missed you.

Are you rocking back & forth yet? =) Chanting?

Now that YaBB v2.2.1 has been released, it's safe to try out some mods:

http://www.boardmod.org/yabb/YaBB.pl?board=newsy22 (final release mods)

http://www.boardmod.org/yabb/YaBB.pl?board=beta_y22 (beta mods)

Besides the one mentioned in this thread, I also installed the new & improved "Advanced" Quick-Reply mod. That's the box at the bottom. It now retains any configuration adjustments you make .. such as box size (height & width), and even the TEXT-size changes we tried so hard to incorporate. (I prefer 13px.)

http://radified.com/cgi-bin/yabb2/YaBB.pl?num=1205475933/17#17 (Quick-Reply box mod)

But the main thing I like about this Quick-Reply mod is that it comes with a Quick-Quote feature .. called "Mark & Quote". Simply highlight the text you want to quote and click Mark & Quote .. and Presto! » your quoted text magically appears in the Quick-Reply box below. Very nice and easy to use. But the quick-quote feature only works with the Quick-Reply box (I think).

I also installed a "Reputation" system (Karma Points) .. called YaRS .. Yet another Reputation System, which has been out for many revisions, so it seems fairly well developed. More here:

http://radified.com/cgi-bin/yabb2/YaBB.pl?num=1206684490

The entire YaRS mod can be disabled with a single click .. if we find we don't like it. It gives people a formal (fun?) way to express gratitude. If we had installed this earlier, you would probably be leading in the Karma category, since your posts are so helpful.

I even installed a supe'd up Email notification (still in beta, v0.5a) .. which John requested. He likes it and says it works good.

http://www.boardmod.org/yabb/YaBB.pl?board=beta_y22;action=display;num=120591418... (Advanced Email Notification mod)

I also installed a patch-mod (also in beta) which fixed the quoted-text problem we had with quotes that were made with YaBB v1.x script:

http://radified.com/cgi-bin/yabb2/YaBB.pl?num=1203620358

Upgrades to the forum script usually mean I have to re-install all mods (which suks). But now that the boys at YaBB are focusing all the attention on developing Y3.0 (which will come with support for databases), it's safe to try out a few mods .. which might eventually become standard features in upcoming releases.

http://radified.com/cgi-bin/yabb2/YaBB.pl?num=1205278989 (YaBB v3.0 to come with support for databases)

Overall, the forum appears to be running stably .. and it's especially nice that nobody is complaining we're using "excessive server resources". I would've never dreamed of installing these mods at Lunarpages, for fear they'd pull our plug.
