Cannot Log In after Restore - (StorageCraft's Shadow Desktop 3.2)
Jun 14th, 2008 at 9:35am

Hi.  I am running XP-Pro on a Dell 8600 laptop.  The Dell has a Hitachi 60gb drive.
   I own 2 identical 60gb drives.
Using ShadowDesktop 3.2, I took an image of my 60gb (call it Hitachi-1).  I put that image on an Iomega 320 USB20 drive.  I (think I) did this from the program, not the Recovery CD (sorry).

After successfully taking this image, I opened the laptop, removed the drive (Hitachi-1) and inserted Hitachi-2).
I then restored (using the Recovery CD) to the drive now in the laptop (Hitachi-2).

It booted to the XP-Pro Login screen.  I entered my ID and PW.  It sat there for a long time, then displayed "closing connections" and brought me back to the :Login screen.  I tried both David and Administrator.  I tried disconnecting the network cable.
I then did another restore.  This time I checked the "Use MBR in the image" - same failure.

Note: I am NEW to Shadow-Desktop.  I am NOT thinking I've done things correctly.  There may be settings or checkboxes I've failed to check.  I did NOT check the "hidden track/sector checkbox"

One more thing: When choosing the destination for the restore (C: in this case), you can right-click on that dirve and (I forget how they phrase it) empty it or free up the space.  I did not do that.

I can only tell you it didn't work.

Thanks

Maybe send a PM or email to Pleo. He's the ShadowProtect guy.

These types of issues are always a concern .. with *any* cloning program.

cardinal23,

It sounds like a drive letter issue. I'm not sure why this could have happened but why not try the fix?

Clear Sig from a BING boot disc or the Acronis xfdisk boot CD.

The download link for xfdisk is

http://www.acronis.com/files/support/mbrautowrite_en.iso

Download this .ISO and burn it (as an image, not as data) to a CD.
I use ImgBurn but if you use Nero, it's Recorder, Burn image.

Boot to the CD. You will see "Press any key to rewrite MBR". Press a key and you will be instructed to "Press ENTER to reboot" so press ENTER and remove the CD. Your computer should boot to WinXP.

Cardinal23, I recommend that you perform the restore using the following settings:

    Set Partition Active:  Yes
Restore MBR from the image file:  Yes
    Restore disk signature:  Yes
Restore Disk Hidden Track:  Yes (there is no disadvantage for so doing)
    Use Hardware Independent Restore:  No
Did you review chapter 8 in the ShadowProtect User Guide?  I also recommend that you use the "Create an exact primary partition" option during the restore operation.

Does that help?

HAven't tried it yet.  Got this advice from the StorageCraft forum.  I'll post once I've tried it.

I'm not sure why the system would not allow you to log in.  Can you access Safe Mode?  It sounds like the restore process worked as intended, but there is something else going on.
If you do decide to try the restore again, you may want to delete the partition in advance (since you're not sure it's partition the way you want) and go with a fresh start.  During the restore process, you should be able to right-click on the destination drive and create a new partition that is exactly the same size as the old one, or use the entire disk, either one should work.  Restore the MBR from the image file, the Disk Signature, and the Hidden Disk Track.  You probably do not need HIR, but you may check it also if you want to (no harm in it).

cardinal23,

I've seen that screen many times in testing when I was deliberately causing drive letter problems. I'm not sure why that should apply to you but the fix is easy. See Method #3.

The problem I experienced was:
After the Restore, the Windows XP Login screen appeared.  I entered my correct ID and PW.  However, instead of logging me in, it simply brought the Login screen back again.  I couldn't log in.

I need to try the suggestions presented above.
Once I've done that, I'll report back.
Thanks

That was one of the problems I encountered. Recurring login screens with failed attempts at login.

Cardinal23, before you try Method #3 ("Kawecki's Trick") as recommended by Brian in Reply #7, can you first perform the restore and be sure to enable the option “Restore MBR from the image file” as noted in Reply #4 and #6?  I suspect it will work….

Pleonasm,

My understanding is the image has been restored and cardinal23 is stuck at the login screen. If zeroing the DiskID works he doesn't need to do another restore. But he will need to work out why it happened. I don't think it's a SP problem.

Brian, I agree with your assessment.  What we don’t know, however, is whether or not Cardinal23 originally enabled the “Restore MBR from the image file” option when he restored the system partition.  My guess is that he did not—but, if he had, then the difficulty he is now experiencing would not have occurred.  If Cardinal23 feels inclined to conduct this experiment, then we would learn the root cause of the issue.
