Can Not Get Ghost.exe to Start From Hard Drive

I want to start ghost from a folder on my hard drive (C:\ghost) but

the floppies I have tried all give the same result of "Invalid Drive

specification."

XP SP3 Boot Floppy

type c: at the A:\> Prompt
type d: at the A:\> Prompt
type e: at the A:\> Prompt

and I get "Invalid Drive specification" message.

Using the Radified XP boot floppy I get the same results.

Using the Ghost 2003.793 New Standard boot floppy I can exit the DOS

Ghost that starts and at the A:\> Prompt I type c: and get the C:\

Prompt but when I type cd ghost I get a message like invalid directory.

The other thing that I think I should mention is that I partitioned and

formatted my hard drive as follows:

C:\ Partition NTFS first half of the space and it has XP SP3,

F:\ Partition FAT32 second half of the space and it is for the Ghost

image chunks of 650 MB to be writen to.

You CAN NOT access an NTFS hard drive like C: from a dos prompt.
DOS cannot even see an NTFS partition. It can only see partitions or drives that are formatted as FAT, FAT-16 or FAT-32.

Ghost CAN however and should have NO problem seeing and Imaging an NTFS hard drive when it's run in DOS from a DOS boot disk.

That's the way I've been running Ghost for many years, since Ghost 2002.
I actually prefer running it from a boot floppy because that's the only way Ghost 2002 or 2003 will make a bootable DVD copy of my C: drive.

If you're just going to make an image to a HD partition or External drive, you can use Ghost on a Floppy, CD or even a Flash Drive or Flash Memory Card, if your computer is capable of booting from those sources.
Ghost 2003 is the last version small enough to fit on a 1.44m Floppy Disk along with the DOS boot files.

I used the ghost 2003.793 boot floppy to start the ghost.exe from the

FAT32 F: partition and the odd thing is that the F: partition shows up as

the C:\> Prompt (I typed c: <enter> and then typed dir <enter> and

got the GHOST folder) so I just type cd ghost <enter> and then

ghost.exe <enter> and the ghost.exe starts up with the About Norton

Ghost screen.

Thanks for the help. Now for a new post on a few of the switches later

today.

Ghost originally was designed to install on a hard drive. Then there was an option for you to make a Ghost boot floppy. Once that floppy was made and certified OK, all the Ghost files on the HD could be deleted, to eliminate the HD bloat that it causes.

Since I first realized that, with Ghost 2002, I've never had any Ghost files on my hard drive. Run Ghost from the floppy disk where it was designed to run, and you'll have virtually NO problems running it.

If you ever intend to restore a Ghost image to a blank HD, then that Image MUST be a

Disk Image

and not a Partition Image.
(unless, you know how to fix the boot sector that the Partition Image does not completely rebuild during the restore process)
Where you store it makes little difference as long as the media is large enough to hold it.

I keep all my XP hard drives in FAT-32 format so I can use FDISK to fix the boot sector if I need to.
