Replace drive in new, replacemen laptop with drive from old laptop??

Gentlemen,
Forgive me. I need a little help. And you guys know this stuff!
A client of mine had a new, Windows 7, HP laptop.
Supposedly, the motherboard died. He sent it to HP.
Client kept the hard drive off the dead laptop
HP sent him a brand new replacement laptop (same model).
I know same-model machines can be different / have different drivers and controllers (counter-intuitive, but true).
What would you expect to happen if he:
“opened the new laptop and replace it’s drive with the old drive?” I know the old drive is good. I just looked at it in an enclosure.
If this (drive-replacement) is a BAD idea, we’re still OK, because I (will soon) have an image of the old drive, and an imaging program (ShadowDesktop from StorageCraft) ) and can restore this image onto the new machine.
Thanks and sorry.
David

I would expect it to work .. but would take the machne thru its paces .. making sure everything works as expected (play DVDs, burn CDs, stream audio, etc.) .. no quirks.
Brian would know more, as I think he has first-hand experience with things like this.
He is on Australia time.

I agree. It should boot as if the HD was in the old computer. But you never know with Win7. At the worst it will need a "repair" from the Win7 DVD.

That may not work because of HP's 240 head geometry.
