Nice!

Regarding this entry:  Deer Calling .

When I visited Sweden back in about 2003, I think I was told that what we refer to as *elk* in the USA, in Sweden they were calling their equivalent species *deer*.  I suspect that the *deer* reference must be used throughout Europe, being as the picture is from England (Maybe Christer can help out with confirming that assumption?).  I wonder if Europe has what we refer to as *deer*, and if so, what are they called?

I think our (USA) phrase for that title would be *Elk Bugling*.

...

It's always interesting to see how different people are moved and react to different photos.  My favorite was:  Amazing Midwinter Sunset (4:30pm) .

And second was:  Where the Buffalo roam .

Well, there's a lot of confusion depending on the language. I guess that the species you call "Elk" is what we call Kronhjort.

What we call Älg is close to "Elk" in name and pronounciation but you call it "Moose".

Then there are Ren which is domesticated and you call "Reindeer", Santa's means of transportation and finally Rådjur which I think is Roe Deer in English.

I have probably answered a question that has not been asked ... Huh ... but I did my best.

By the way, sorry for the links pointing to webpages in Swedish but look at the pictures ... Wink ... !

I went Wiki on the different species:

Kronhjort - Red Deer

Älg - Moose

Ren - Reindeer

Rådjur - Roe Deer

It seems like we call most of them ... Shocked ... "deer"!

Boy, did that memory get messed up  Embarrassed !

That's the correct memory!  It took me a while before it started to come back--but, yes, it was when I said *elk* that to our Swedish friends it meant *moose* to them!

And, from the fog of time, it finally started to come back to me--I had mixed up prior international group interactions--it was not my visit to Sweden, but a group of Russians that we hosted a good 10 years before the Sweden trip!  One of their group saw one of our *elk* in a campground they visited, and the interpreter kept saying *deer*.  I knew that what he had seen was an elk, based on the size description, but they kept saying *deer* which is a much smaller species in the USA.

Sorry, Christer, didn't mean to *blame it on the Swedes* when it wasn't the case!  But, the observation I was trying to make is still valid--that picture looks more like our *elk*, and not what we would normally call a *deer* here in the USA!

Isn't that the truth!!!!!  Grin  After looking at some different Google searches on images of deer and elk--there were a lot of overlaps of pictures displayed!  (And, boy, are there ever a lot of *deer* that I didn't even know existed around the world!)
