They are certainly louder than a regualr 7200-RPM IDE drive, but I wouldn't say they sound like a buzz saw. If you put the box on the floor, away from your ears, it will sound quieter, especially if the floors are carpeted. You can also barricade sound-deadening material around the box. But they're not for people who are sensitive to sound.
