USB support for Plextor DVD Burner
Dec 27
th
, 2005 at 7:56pm
Purchased a Plextor PX-716UF DVD burner so I could make bakeup images of my hard drive, but so far I've had no luck. I've tried using this so called universal USB driver (usbaspi.sys) on my bootable floppy but nothing I try will make the drive recognizable. [As an aside: I'm running a Dell Dimension 4550 with version 5.1 XP (SP1)]
Any suggestions?
Thanks in advance.

Using Ghost 2003 and booting to DOS?
Have you tried the *Standard Ghost Boot Disk* with USB 2.0 support--(assuming your system's USB controller is USB 2.0 as well as the optical writer)? Does the optical drive show up in the Ghost interface as a *destination* drive?
Yes, there are USB drivers for DOS...
Are you loading the DOS driver in *Config.sy* that mounts a USB optical drive?:
[config.sys]
(other lines)
devicehigh=USBCD.SYS /d:USBCD001
And loading the DOS driver in *Autoexec.bat* that assigns a driver letter to a mounted optical drive?:
[autoexec.bat]
(other lines)
LH MSCDEX /d:USBCD001
No question is stupid...but, possibly the answers are

NightOwl,
I've tried making a *Standard Ghost Boot Disk* with the USB 2.0 support, but when I boot with it, Ghost only sees the floppy drive A and my built in CD; but not the attached USB Plextor DVD burner. I'm assuming that's what you meant by the first portion of your reply.
"Yes, there are USB drivers for DOS. . ."
I've also tried editing both autoexec.bat and config.sys by hand, setup as you described, and using the USBASPI.SYS driver; but I get nothing. During boot-up with that disk, I get the following displayed on the monitor:
Starting. . .

Not much to go on, but that's the extent of my boot-up, using the edited disk.
Thanks.

Sure looks like the USB drive is not being detected--there are some more recent versions of the Panasonic DOS USB driver:
v2.06
, size=37,903, dated 11/26/2002
v2.15
, size=39,093, dated 10/26/2003
v2.20
, size=39,179, dated 11/07/2004
After clicking on the downloaded *.exe* file which extracts the enclosed files, you will find the *Usbaspi.sys* file in the *F2h* subdirectory.

NightOwl,
Success; the *usbaspi.sys* file from V2.20 did the trick. It's funny, the file I was using was newer then those - 8/24/05. I'm not sure where it came from (some guy from work gave it to me and we tried it there on several machine PC's and it worked OK). Anyway, thanks for your assistance; it was deeply appreciated.
