Ghost 2003 & Live Update???
Jul 16

Thinking back over the problems I had the other day that you folks helped me with, I realized that I had not run Live Update to install the updates for NG 2k3. The lock-up I experienced may have been caused by that.
Now, I have always had several Symantec apps to be updated until recently, but had decided to change over to another AV to see if it was true about NAV's high use of resources. The only Symantec SW I have placed into the new "clean install" is Ghost 2k3.
Live Update used to have two 3+MB updates for NG2k3 among all the other updates that would be installed. Now, There is only a small quick something downloaded and installed. I've since found that Symantec no longer supports NG2k3. My version is build 775 even after the so-called update just done. Per Symantec it should be build 793 or higher after the update.
So, my question:
Are the updates that used to be downloaded and installed by Live Update available anywhere else other than Symantec now that they're no longer being supplied?
Thx

Even though they are not offering *tech* support--i.e. their *live chat*, etc., I think they are still using LiveUpdate for Ghost 2003--at least they did two or three months ago--maybe not any longer
--but I don't know why they wouldn't--they have not changed or updated Ghost 2003 since approx Jan., 2005--so LiveUpdating Ghost 2003 is simply a download--not actual *tech support*!
I used to have to do LiveUpdate two or three times before the full update for Ghost 2003 was installed--might try doing it a couple more times if you have not already done so--to see if additional updates get downloaded. Should finally get a message saying you are up to date and no new updates available.
If Symantec is not LiveUpdating older builds of Ghost 2003, unfortuantely I don't think there is any other source for downloads. Would have to get the most recent version by purchase of Norton Systemworks
Premire
2004, 2005, or 2006--or Ghost 9.x or 10.x--Ghost 2003 is included with those products, and have the latest build. Some of the older programs are still for sale--and can be had for $5-10--try Ebay,
Pricewatch
, Google searches, or other online searches.

You're right there were several updates that used to be installed. The only ones that stick in my mind are the 2 large ~3MB+ that were installed one following the other after a re-boot.
I've tried re-booting and re-running l/u several times now. All it tells me is that I have all the updates. I KNOW OTHERWISE! It seems that they have cut NG2k3 off from any of the updates that they have been supplying until now [the last few months].
I have had no confidence in the idea of making images from an active, in use partition. The only partition I'm interested in imaging is my O/S partition. That's why I have never upgraded from 2k3 even though I did upgrade my other Symantec apps to 2k5. The DOS interface is all I need or want. Except ... maybe ... the browser is kinda nice to have. My experience the other day has only reinforced the feeling of not wanting more that the DOS interface.
My NSW2k5 is nearing being needed to be replaced. This had ticked me off enough that I'm considering dumping everything Symantec. There is other s/w out there that will do the same jobs! Microsoft still has the updates for Win98se available even though they have stopped supporting it.[No. I am not still using Win98. I did up to WinXP quite a while ago.] I would expect no less from Symantec.
OK. I'm through ranting. Thx for your help and information.

Same problem as solo_voyager for me today...
i even tried searching Symantec ftp for Ghost 2003 updates w/o any luck:
ftp://ftp.symantec.com/public/
Btw what makes me angry is this document by Symantec:
http://snipurl.com/f8hq
Updated Norton Ghost 2003 files
The following Norton Ghost 2003 files have been updated: Ghost.exe, GhostWalker.exe, GDisk.exe, Ghwrap.exe, and Ghreboot.exe.
Symantec recommends that the older versions of these files be replaced with the most current version
.

Useful hint indeed... found the Ghost 2003 CD which comes with Ghost 10.0 and got latest Ghost
build 793
now!
TY so much.

Nice.
For those who dont know how to get the latest build 793 of ghost.
To use liveupdate from ghost version 2003-775 wont work. You will still have the old stuff.
Use liveupdate from ghost version 2003-789 and now you have the new stuff (build 793)

I just ran into a load of problems with a clean install trying to make an image of my system. Prior to the problems I found it odd that Live Update told me I was up to date even though I had performed none.
Despite that, I tried creating an image and that's when I got stuck in the virtual partition - a common problem apparently that these very forums helped me get out of (granted, it took me a few hours as the GHREBOOT file I was using was out of date and I had to burn a new version from Symantec to use).
So, figuring my install of Ghost 03 was flawed I uninstalled and re-installed it - only to run into the No More Updates problem again. Only then did I search here to find this thread. I find it very odd that this is the only thread pertaining to the problem. I am going to assume due to the dates on the posts here that it's only very recently that the updates stopped becoming available and people have yet to encounter the problem until they do a clean install as I have.
So is that it? Is our beloved original version of Ghost 03 useless?
edit: I see now, must purchase a new version of any of the above mentioned by Owl. *sigh* - but so worth it.

Assuming that you have LiveUpdated and have the most recent build of Ghost 2003 (793) on your system before Symantec stopped supporting the LiveUpdate of Ghost 2003:
If you plan on uninstalling Ghost's Windows installation, I'd recommend making a copy of the Ghost's installation sub-directory that has the LiveUpdated files already in it that was made before Symantec shut down offering the LiveUpdate support for older Ghost 2003 builds.
You also need to copy, for a WinXP installation, the *C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Symantec\Ghost* sub-directory to get all those Ghost files as well!
The above files in Win98se are found here: *C:\WINDOWS\All Users\Application Data\Symantec\Ghost*
Just create a *Ghost 2003 Backup* sub-directory, then create *Ghost Backup* below that, and Windows Ghost Backup for the additional files from the OS sub-directories, copy all files there, do the uninstall, reinstall, copy all the files back to the installation sub-directories. Should get you back to the most recent build by doing that--I don't think there's any problem as far as functionality by doing the above. If someone needs to do this and tries it, report back with the results!
If you have Ghost backup images that include your Ghost 2003 Windows installation that was LiveUpdated--you can use Ghost Explorer to retrieve those sub-directories from the image and it will have the the most recent LiveUpdated build of Ghost 2003 there as well.
Hope this helps.

Ugh - Owl I wish you had gotten here sooner. I was messing around this morning and thought I would try the overwrite route. I restored my original Windows config with the updated Ghost install that worked before and took all the files from the Symantec folder in Program Files. I then redid my Windows install (I hadn't gotten that far into my other reinstall so starting over was not as bad as it could have been) and replaced the new Ghost install files. It didn't take as it still showed the "old build" version. I never thought about grabbing the files from All Users/Application Data directories!
Awesome thinking - what you said should work. I will report back when I get a chance to try it.

I have and updated "build 793" Ghost 2003 on my old computer.
To put Ghost 2003 on my new computer I am building which has 2 sata HD's and a Plextor Sata CD/DVD writer, I take it I will need build 793, correct?
How can I "transpher" build 793 to the new computer? Do I burn it to a cd?
I am confused with the answer Nightowl gave to Lightminute and others .

Adam,
You are correct - version "build 793" is the latest of Ghost and the one you will need. If you install Ghost right now onto a machine and attempt to update it, Norton will tell you that there are no updates to do. The way around this is what NightOwl said to do above.
You will first need to make backups/copies of the directories he mentions in the post from a machine that has the build 793 on it.
When you install Ghost onto a new machine you need to "update" the build yourself by replacing the directories on the new install with the ones you backed up above. I never got a chance to try it out but if you do it please post back with results to add to the body of knowledge here.

We will all learn the actual state of affairs in the next month or two as Symantec begins to release the 2007 versions of their products, but - based on other posts on this forum – it appears likely that Ghost 2003 (DOS version) will no longer be included with any of the other Symantec products, although Ghost 8.2 (Windows PE version) may continue to be present on the recovery environment of Norton Save & Restore.
Therefore, it would wise for all those who may wish to use Ghost 2003 in the future to retain their existing installation files – or, for those who wish to become new users of Ghost 2003, to purchase the product quickly before it becomes permanently unavailable.

What packages or products exactly are ones that include the newest build of Ghost 03? I would like to pick one of these up so I can just do a straight install in the future.

Lightminute, let’s await a confirming post from NightOwl or another ‘Ghost 2003 Guru,’ but my understanding is that Norton SystemWorks 2006
Premier
and Ghost 10 are the only two products that now include the DOS version of Ghost 2003. At this time of year, you’ll easily find some outstanding sales on these products in retail and online stores.
It appears that “Ghost 10” is being assimilated into the Norton Save & Restore product, and the existing version of Norton Save & Restore doesn’t include Ghost 2003 (although it does include Ghost 8.2), based on other posts on this forum. Therefore, I suspect that there will not be a standalone version of “Ghost 11” sold in 2007 (eliminating one method by which Ghost 2003 may be purchased). Additionally, given that support for Ghost 2003 has been terminated, it’s inclusion in the 2007 version of Norton SystemWorks seems dubious.
Symantec will begin to rollout its 2007 product line in the next 30 days, so we’ll see what the future holds for the continued distribution of Ghost 2003 and Ghost 8.2.
