What is Ghost 12?
Was there a Ghost 11?

Seems to be different than Norton Save and Restore?

Howard, please see this thread.

Norton Save & Restore 1.0 included "Ghost 11", although there appeared to be no functional difference of the application as compared to Ghost 10 (possibly with the exception of different drivers on the recovery environment CD).

Not true.  There is one big functional difference between Ghost 10 and Norton S&R:  Norton S&R added the capability/function to backup selected folders/files in addition to image backups.

WHOA ... my head is starting to spin.  It sounds as if there is not only a "hot-imaging" consumer product designated Ghost 11, but there is also a "cold-imaging" enterprise product with the same designation.

Corporate Ghost 8.x is the recent past Ghost version.

Symantec released retail Ghost 9.x and 10.x--which are really not based on the previous DOS based Ghost as is the Corporate v8.x!

Apparently, when Symantec wanted to release a major update to their Corporate Ghost 8.x, they felt it would be *too confusing* to call the next release *Ghost 9.x*, which then overlaps with their retail Ghost 9.x!

So, Symantec jumped from Ghost v8.x to Ghost v11.x on their corporate side.

And, Ghost 9 and 10 has morphed into *Norton Save and Restore*.

(By the way, the Corporate *Ghost Solution Suite v1.0* is when Ghost v8.2 was released--and *Ghost Solution Suite v2.0* now has the *Ghost 11* version designation!)

It appears that *Ghost 12* is going to be a retail version of Ghost--see the quote here:
Norton Ghost 12:  Beta Release

I don't think Symantec has ever called their retail *Norton Save & Restore*
Ghost 11.x
--that I have seen!

Quote:
Norton Ghost 12.0 offers all the power of the Symantec Norton Save & Restore, with a few additional features.

So, will it be DOS based....or Ghost Save and Restore (Ghost 9/10) based?!  Talk about random naming confusion!

I've had a quick look at the Ghost 12 beta. It needs dotNet Framework 2 and it resembles Ghost 10 but with a slightly different GUI. The CD boots marginally faster than Ghost 10 and the recovery environment has Ghost type 10 menus and Ghost 10 type drive letters (same drive letters as WinXP). I didn't check any of the fancy feature such as..

advanced features like Remote Management, Physical to Virtual image conversion, and LightsOut Recovery.

Thanks for your input--I guess that tells us that retail Ghost 12 will not be related in any way to the Corporate Ghost 11 product!

Ghost4me, sorry for the confusion.  The intent of my comments in Reply #1 was not to suggest that Norton Save & Restore 1.0 is the same as Norton Ghost, but only that (1) the Norton Ghost component within NSR is known as “version 11,” and (2) that this component isn’t substantially different from the separately sold Norton Ghost 10 product.

As Rad noted previously, NSR 1.0 is sometimes known as “Ghost 11” – see this post.

NightOwl, I was unaware that the corporate “Ghost Solution Suite v2.0 now has the Ghost 11 version designation.”  Good to know (but quite confusing, I agree.)

I am not able to find documentation which says this.

Where have you seen this referenced?

Brian, can you confirm that both Ghost 2003 and Ghost 8.2 are absent from Ghost 12?

I think we'd have to wait until the official retail product comes out to know for sure.

Pleo, there is no "Legacy" choice in the Recovery Environment. The files and folders layout in the ISO are quite different from previous Ghost versions. The ISO size is 179 MB and there is a large file called boot.wim which is 147 MB.

Brian, the absence of the “legacy” option in the recovery environment for Ghost 12 isn’t encouraging.  Of course, we’ll need to wait and see what the final product bundle contains, but it suggests that Ghost 8.2 is disappearing from the consumer landscape.

Have you also looked at the beta version of Norton Save & Restore 2.0?  If so, how is the Ghost component of NSR 2.0 similar to (different from) Ghost 12?
