Heads up - Preparing to move the site
Feb 18
th
, 2008 at 12:36pm
Heads up. I'm preparing to move the site .. to a WiredTree ("fully managed") VPS .. in Chicago. See this blog entry for more:
http://mt4.radified.com/2008/02/think-i-mightve-found-our-new-web-host-wiredtr.h...
Any posts (including this one) made between now and when the new server is up are likely to be lost. So copy-n-save your posts in a local text file.
I'm backing-up the site now. Soon as that's verified, I'll place the order for the new VPS, and begin uploading the site .. extract the archive and begin configuring our new puppy. Fun city! The site at the new server should be notceably more responsive.
Wish me luck. This will be our first foray into the world of VPS. You can learn more about our new server here:
http://www.wiredtree.com/managedvps/index.php
http://www.wiredtree.com/managedvps/features.php
http://www.wiredtree.com/ournetwork/
http://www.wiredtree.com/ournetwork/datacenter.php
This is the nicest set-up I could find .. after considerable research. It has it everything I was looking for .. fully managed, cPanel / WHM, PHP5, MySQL 5 ... more memory (256 MB), bandwidth (300 gigs), and disk space (30 gigs) than we'll ever use.
I am pinging ~80ms to the WireTree site:

Funny how they list node #6 as "Waterbury, Connecticut" (I been there. Not a fun place.) .. with a ping result as 16ms. Uh, 16ms to the East coast .. I don't think so. Must be mis-labeled.

Well, not quite as good as my 13ms tin-can line to LP, but feels fine:

Hmmm. Only 13 hops for you. 20 for me.
Folks around the rest of the country should like the closer server, being centrally located.
Back-up complete. Downloading now.

I think the oc.cox... tracert id stands for orange county, so the routing should be similar.
Personally I don't think the problems before with LP were network related, but were/are server related (just my guess).

Well *this* change should be good (growth).
Email from WiredTree:
Quote:
The 128 RAM upgrade is an internal upgrade which isn't reflected on the invoice. It will in fact be applied to your account once we get it setup. On a side note we need to call you to verify your order. Is now a good time to do so?
I feel like I did good. Lots of research. Good deal. Everything I wanted (plus an extra 128MB RAM).

The hop called Waterbury is between Irvin and Los Angles, so I think that this particular Waterbury is in CA, not the East Coast.

The line on the map-view traces out the Connecticut. Looks weird. More email:

It was a pleasure speaking with you over the phone. I just got word from our Datacenter techs that we are getting a brand new hardware node online this evening for new accounts. This might delay your setup by a few hours. Just a heads up.

Thanks for making me laugh. I needed that. Here's an answer to my question:
Quote:
Hardware node is the term we use for the parent server that hosts all of the VPS plans. The specs are detailed out on our website under the VPS section. Its been stress testing on the rack since last Wednesday to burn in the hardware. So far after 5 days of getting the crap beat out of it by our stress testing apps we figure its stable enough for customers. =)
Being first on a new node should help with responsiveness, I would guess.

It got to be midnight last night and my eyeballs fellout from reading all the "New account set-up" PDFs they sent me .. so I feel asleep. Back at it now. Here's interesting email I received:
Quote:
We upgraded to CentOS 5 today.
The first problem I had was that the password I created for the account was "not secure enough". So the software would not create a default cPanel account for me in WHM (web host manager).
The first thing they have you do upon account log-in is to create a new password. A slider/bar turns from red to yellow to green as you add letters, capital letter, numbers and special charaters such as #$%@!
In the Welcoming email, I was surprised to see this paragraph .. listed under heading "Informational Emails from your Server"
Quote:
If you receive an email about a "Brute Force Warning" it means that the security systems in place on your server have detected someone trying to brute force, or guess, logins and passwords of users on your server.
This happens quite frequently and isn't anything to be overly concerned about.
There are many internet worms and hijacked 'zombie' computers on the Internet which do automated scans and brute force attempts all of the time. The email is letting you know that the system has detected such an event and firewalled off the attacking computer.
